AC Question

I have tried looking thru the Haynes, 85 FSM, and a search on this forum with no luck. I need to know which is the high and low side of my ac compressor. Looking at it from the drivers side there are 2 "ports." The closest one has the letter "S" next to it, and the far one has the letter "D." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't get why they didn't put the info in the FSM. Hopefully someone knows.

The "S" and "D" seems to be on my wifes Escort, too. So when I get that figured out I may know the answer.

"D"ischarge.

S = Low pressure (fill side)
D = High Pressure (DO NOT fill side)

I just topped off my freon last night in anticipation of the 95 degree heat down South. The low side port that you use to add freon is connected to the larger tube and is closer to the drivers side of the car. The best way to make sure one has the correct port is to turn on the AC and see which tube gets cold. I do this even though I know what port to use just so I do not make a mistake. You do not want to mix up the ports and try to add freon to the high side port. I also use the AC guage to assure that I do not overfill the freon. Stay cool.

use the fitting that says "S" for suction. use the "D" fitting and you'll blow yourself up !!!!

The outside temp was 93 yesterday and the Southern humidity was mid 70 dewpoint (think like New Orleans or Key West) and my AC got the air coming out of the vent as measured by the thermometer stuck in the vent down to 60 degrees. This AM it was probably 75 outside and I had the vent temp. down to 40 degrees. Comfortable. As previous posters have said, be very careful with refilling an AC. You cannot make a mistake!

Well, right now, my problem is that the compressor isn't letting me actually recharge the system. I hook everything up, and the first time I tried, I got lucky, the plug wasn't on all the way, and it blew off. So I shoved it in as far as it would go, and slowly let the freon in, and it got up to 44 lbs real fast. Cut it off, and it slowly went down to around 25 lbs. It seems like the "clutch" on my compressor isn't engaging, because when I turn the ac on, the rpm's stay the same, and I don't hear any noises that it's actually working. The pulley turns and all, but I don't know how to fault check it.
