85 Se Wont Go Fast

85 GSL-SE ... starts, runs, wont idle, will drive but VERY VERY SLOW!!! after a slow rip up the street after changing fuel filter... because it seems like a fuel issue i popped the hood and the manifold and racing beat cat delete pipe were RED. These pipes were GLOWING RED!!! i just changed the fuel filter thinking it was a fuel issue.... lots of fuel pressure and the pump is fine.... tons of spark. timing could be a little off but i stabbed the distributor according to factory service manual specifications on the yellow mark!! unfortunately i dont have a timing light or know anyone with one.... just curious about the injectors and if the manifolds being so hott signals a fuel problem....

P.S. Tons of compression ..... fresh motor

any advice will help...

Thanks
Marshall

It sounds like it could be a plugged catalytic-converter, or your timing could be off. I guess it depends on how it ran before.

Your timing is too far retarded. Either that, or you don't have any leading spark...

If you don't have cats, then I doubt your exhaust is clogged...

tons of spark both leading and trailing.... new plugs and wires.... also how do i adjust for retardation.... looking at the motor from driver side turn towards rear or front ? currently at the middle point..... stabbed it and left it.... restabbed it left it same thing. tomorrow may buy a timing light and see what its at.... and am going to get injectors flow tested and cleaned.....

You have the dist in incorrectly. Read the FSM on how to properly install. There is also a thread in the archives that tells you how to verify TDC.

Different engine correct? Had lower pulley off? My guess is that the lower pulley was not put on correctly and now your timing may line up but is not correct on the engine.

I take it you are looking at the S4 FSM?
Also again, are you using the SE AFM?

Did you block off the EGR port also on the engine?

I would go back and recheck all of your work. I did the S4 intake swap on one of my Se's along time ago and had trouble like you are having. Unfortunately I don't rememeber what the problem was? :-)

Recheck the connections between the AFM intake hose where they join together. Make sure that the Bypass tube that goes from the tube to the plenum is not leaking.
Verify that the electrical connector at the AFM is secure.
Verify that you don't have a large intake leak at the intake to engine gasket.
Did you use the S4 or Se intake gasket?
If you could, take pictures of the engine from various angles and post them up so I can look.

i will take some pictures and post them up tomorrow.... there is no leaks... vaccuum or intake ... checked with propane!!! the only thing would be fuel or timing.... timing is where im looking at thispoint.... i just dont understand how to set it .... i thought i did it according to FSm but i could be all wrong... i lined everything up but the pulley may be wrong i guess....

Thanks for all your help!!!

I will post pics tomorrow!!!

Well, my bet is still on the pulley being wrong.
