85 rx7 swap?

I just bought my first rx7 it is an 85 gs. My motor is running like crap cause it has 197,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anyone knows how hard it is to do a turbo2 swap. I can get motor tranny and wiring harness for 1600 but other than that i have know idea on what else i need.

You need to do alot of reading and lerning before doing anything to your FB let alone a Turbo II swap. Read the first gen FAQ page and all your answers should be there. Welcome to the forum and the addictive world of Rotaries.

The milage isnt neccesarily to blame,200K is actually pretty common for a 12A engine. There are lots of easy, external things that could be causing the bad running.

And yea, read up....you have a long way to go before you start talking TII swap.Unless you have plenty of money to pay someone to do the job.If you decide to do the TII swap, search the site fir info, since plenty of people(myself included) have done it.If you have specific questions along the way, feel free to post them.

Welcome,
Steve

I kinda did a tII swap into my 7. Not really I paid someone to do it, It was cheap because he really wanted to do it. Swapping the front cover isn't that bad just know you should be carefull when putting back in the electronic distributor. The wiring sucks and I don't have the patience for it so I paid someone else to do it. It cost $1500 cdn plus tax to have it done. Not bad to save myself a whole lota headache. Plus its freakin fast. You also have to replace the fuel pump as the tII needs more fuel 160gph. But the rad and tranny will both work for that motor.

mileage isnt always the cause of a poorly running engine. you need to check the condition of your essentials first. plugs, wires, cap rotor, air filter, fuel filter, vaccume lines and check for vaccume leaks, timing and corroding of the ignitors or their connectors. that should give you a good start. after that you may be happy with the way the car runs and drives that you'll just keep it the way it is and modify it that way rather than a TII swap.

I dont know why it runs like crap. I put new ngk plugs in it and compression tested it it got a 7, 7.1, and 7 on the three apex seals in the rear rotor and it got 5, 5.1, and 5 on the front rotor. I checked the vaccum lines and there is no leaks. Another thing is the secondaries in the carburetor weren't working so yesterday i freed them up but when you rev the engine to about 6000 rpm's they are only open a little bit. So i was thinking since the motor has 200k on it that i would tryand get a new motor/rebuilt 12a for it but they are like 2 grand. So if i was gonna spend 2k i would rather get a turbo 2 with 100 horsepower more than the 12a. The only thing is i didnt know if i would need to plumb high pressure fuel lines and get a fuel pump.

going to a TII engine is a lot of work and a lot of money! try a search on it. there are a TON of threads on it. you'd be better off buying the turbo II rather than converting. unless you have the money, you are in danger of breaking yourself even thinking about the swap. you are looking at about 3K when its all said and done, give or take a few.
