Where is the starter?

I was just wondering where the starter is in a first gen? Can it be accessed from the top? I need to replace it. If you can't tell I am new to mechanics but I think I can handle a starter as long as i don't have to lift the car.

You're gonna have to lift it, or it'll pretty a tight squeeze. It's under the car, driver's side of the transmission.

Ok thank you. Do you know if it can be swapped out from the top? I am willing to try and squeeze through since I don't have a good palce to lift it. Also do you know of anywhere that has a guide on how to do a swap of the starter since I have never done it before? Thanks again ~John

Can't do it from the top.. Just use your jack and get some jackstands to support it. or another idea is do pull the front end on a curb and you can get under the car sometimes..

i did mine from the top but i have removed ac, no ps so there is more room. It should be in factory service manual.check the archives for that. its only 2 bolts, and 3 wires (at least 3 on mine. service manual only talks about 2). the starter is on the driver side. the bottom bolt is easyest to access when lifted but it can be done without. i just changed mine last week, took me about 20 min.

I may consider taking the ac stuff out since i doubt it works any way after sitting for so long. I was told by someone that my best option for ac would be to buy a complete aftermarket unit with climate contol and all.

Any how.. Ok , I will definately looks for that factory service manual. I would lift the car but it is parked on a hill. I would prefer to life it when it was on a flat surface in a garage and when we didn't have hurricane winds

Thanks for the tips again , I will keep you all updated on how it goes.

Yea I Just Did My Starter, Not A Great Project but Yea IF You get it From Underneither There Still Like One Or Two Things You Have To Remove Before You Have Enough Room To Pull Out The Starter, Jus Remember Which Hole The Long Bolt Goes Into lol

I just answered this question the other day. What is with all these reposted questions just a few days after they are first asked?

If you do it from the bottom then there is nothing in the way. Its just two bolts, one goes in one way, and the other goes in the opposite direction. After you get it off then you have two bolts holding on wires and the other wire is just a little connector piece that slides off. Its really simple, and if you have the starter with you to replace it, it shouldn't take but maybe five to ten minutes.

Ok thank you all for the assistance. I went to a local autoparts store and told them the exact model year make eveything. They said a starter was 50 bucks is that the how much it should be? I just want to make sure they will get me the right one.
