85 Rx-7 Help!!

My buddy and I picked up an old 85 rx-7, at first when we got it, the engine wouldnt turn over at all.... after a day or 2 we went back to try omething and it started turning over... we replaced the spark plugs and checked for a spark and well, it has one... but our problem is that the car still isnt starting at all.... we for some reason are thinking that its the fuel pump but were not sure, also, isnt the fuel pump located in the fuel tank?? is there anything else we can try to get it running at all?? It was sitting for 2 years and we got it from a friend of a friend who said he had it started shortly after his brother had given it to him... were trying to restore it basically... the motor is a 12a rotary and its the GS model....

or check my profile for aim and such stuff....

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

The pump is located forward of the fuel tank. You'll want to get to it because you'll need to replace the fuel filter if it's been sitting for 2 years. Draining the old gas is a good idea too. Then you probably have lots of varnish and crap in the carb. Get some carb cleaner and spray through all the passages you can get to. You really just need to remove the airhorn to do this. Then check all the vacuum hoses, especially the one running from the rear of the intake manifold to the left rear of the carb. Then, for good measure, read the mother of all no-start threads linked to from the FAQ page in the 1st gen forum (look at the sticky threads at the top of the thread list).

Good luck!

If your fuel filter has fuel, then the fuel pump is working. It's probably flooded.

if it has gas and spark, then it probably is flooded. search for unflooding a 12A. there are tons of threads about it. if anything, try a little starting fluid. always works for me. be sure to make you have good gas as well

akright.... we changed the fuel filter so now we have a better flow of gas into the carb, we have a spark... used some carb cleaner and stuff but still no go.... what else could be wrong?? were assuming its something really dumb.... also, we noticed the amps were right around 10, we tried jumping it from a bigger truck which got the amps up a bit higher but its still not starting... does the carb need to be rebuilt or something??? help lol... also i really appreciate everyone responding to this, youve all been a real help so far!!

Ok liek i always say do a poor man's compression test FIRST. Don't waste any more money on plugs and filters and pumps and ect....just take out all the plugs disconnect the coils and have your buddy turn the motor over, (pour some mmo down the carb too if it's been sitting) put your hand infront of the plug holes and feel for 3 EVEN PULses (strong ones at that) on both front and rear rotors. if you get uneven pulses a new motor is needed and start looking into that. If it seems ok...ie. 3 even pulses from each then continue buying regular tuneup stuff...my 0.02

Change the oil...it may be contaminated by gas that leaked throught the side seals when it flooded and this may help.... Are the plugs wet ever?

It was oil. You should do the MMO treatment it'll probably fix your problem.

I just started a REPU that had been sitting for 3 years. Previously, when it sat for 2 years, the owner had to have it towed up to 30mph before it would start! I figured No Compression, so I pulled the plugs on #1 rotor, squirted MMO in, replaced plugs, and it started INSTANTLY! Good thng, 'cause I just bought this 74 REPU beauty for $1100 from him! It's pristine!

To repeat what everyone has said here, an engine needs three things to run:
fuel
spark
compression

check that you are getting all three and if not, post back and we can take it from there. . .

If the plugs are dirty you should take them out and crank the engine over until it all comes out the journals. Have a battery charger ready.

MMO=Marvel Mystery Oil. Comes in a red bottle or can. It will just kinda dribble until it starts except unless you give it a good dose of fuel via gas pedal and a fast rate. If it doesn't give a healthy dose when you smash the gas, your ac pump could be shot.
