85 Mazda RX7 Headlight Popup Flasher Assembly

My headlight/hazard light switch assembly went bad. Bought a new one which is super easy to install but cant figure out how to get to the plug so that I can disconnect the old one and plug in the new one. How much of the dash do I need to remove so that I can get to the plug? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It would help to know what year model car you have, because the hazard switch moves around. But your title talks about the headlight pop-up switch, so I'm a little bit confused.

Maybe include a picture of your dash and what two switches or what individual switch you're talking about?

If it happens, that you have a 1981 to 83 model year car, then the combination switch with the blinker, the hazards, the headlight turn on etc is very easy to get to. It's probably easy on 79/80 and 84/ 85s as well, but I don't have one of those so I can't comment.

Let us know!

Sorry, I had put it in the thread title but not the body of the question. It's an 85 model. The headlight and hazard light switch is over on the left.

Oops sorry, you're right. Someone with an 84/85 can tell you better than me, but I would look from underneath for some Phillips style screws and follow my nose. Back in this era everything is screwed together, not so much plastic parts that snap together, so if something is resisting, don't force it.

It has a screw underneath which allows me to pop it out. The plus is back behind the dash. I am hoping someone knows a secret on how to reach it with dismantling the whole dash.

You should be able to get to the plug after removing the screw and pulling the switch out. If not, remove the seat, put your back on the carpet and stretch out sticking your head up under the dash and wiggle your hand in there to un-plug/re-plug the connector. It's tight but I can do it and I'm 6' 220 lbs.

You should be able to unplug it after the lower screw is removed and the switch and harness are pulled forward. The other way to access the connector if it's bound up, is to remove the instrument cluster.

Seems bound up. I will take another look and see if I can free it up enough to pull it out.
