85 gslse cold intake or Filter add on

What do I need to add a cold intake to my SE? I've seen here in the forum someone add a cone filter along with a part from autozone to there GSLSE. Don't know what part# they have for this part. If anyone knows this write up, please guide me to the right direction. thanks

adding a filter isnt going to do anything but look cool. it will actually only work if you build a cold air box to isolate the air going to the filter otherwise it will just get soakked with hot air from the engine bay. the stock design is better than just a cone filter. best bet for the least ammount of money is to just get a kn drop in and retain the stock air box which pulls in cold air from the front

The factory air box is a cold air intake if the cross over tube in front of the rad extends only half way. Been there done that, tried the adapter and a cone filter vs my k&n panel filter. Cone filter showed no improvement and since it didn't have the runner length before the AFM, it didn't even have the cool sound of a honda with a cai. Just buy the panel filter.

True, but the cone filter isn't all there is to buy. He probably needs that adapter and possibly another piece of duct/hose. If I had my stock set-up on my SE, I would leave it as is and drop in the K&N.

The Mazda competition manual suggest a cold air induction from the rad opening. You have to fab it yourself but it's probably the best we to get the cold air to your engine.
Here it is, from foxed.ca : http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/comp.manual.pdf

I have it in my car...

full engine bay shot - yeah I know it is filthy. I gave up trying to keep it clean until I do the complete refresh, paint, new engine etc etc. Right now its a DD..so the "grosser" it looks the more peeps will leave it alone...at least that is the thought.

but you have to realize that this is actually not going to yeild more power. just cause it flows more doesnt mean hot air is a great idea. hot air is bad, cold air is good.

yes, cold air is better, therefore build a little wall that will bring cold air in working on it now

Thanks for the info. asianImage. Where did you get the adaptor(part# and store) and the k/n filter(also part#)? Let me know when you figured out a way to trap the cold air and direct it to the filter.

okay, yes if you do that, it will make more power.

i bought it because my filter had a few holes... these holes would have killed my engine. my friend offered me the cai for 25. (cone air intake... haha) cheaper than the k&N drop in for the SE and looks nicer

I took the measurement of the front side of the AFM and got everything I needed at Autozone. I don't have the part #'s handy, but they will have what you need. You will need the adapter and the cone filter of course. I think total cost was less than $30.

I prefer using the stock air box so that its still mounted. if you remove the airbox the filter would just be flopping around in the engine bay. for my car i just used a K&N drop in filter, removed the long plastic snorkel that goes across in front of the radiator, and reattached the funnel that goes to the radiator support (the plastic snaps were broken). now it draws air from in front of the radiator.

I did a CAI for my SA (different stock box from a GSL-SE, I realize). I haven't put it back on since my smog check, but it worked well even if it looked a bit junkyard.

I hesitate to show pix of it as I went low-rent on the ducting, but essentially I cut a 3" hole in the radiator side mount below the rad overflow bottle, mounted a flange to it, and used 3" ID flex duct to connect it to the inlet of the stock airbox, via an adapter I made from aluminum sheet.

The beauty of it was that it takes about 3 minutes and a screwdriver to return the car to visible stock, yet it draws cold air from in front of the AC condensor.

Eventually, I plan to replace the flexiduct with something prettier.
