Is this 85 GSL-SE worth my $3500?
Hey guys, I'm thinking about purchasing this car and wanted your take on its value. It's a white 85 GSL-SE in almost perfect condition. It has 139k miles.
Exterior wise it's perfect. The drivers side leather seat is a bit worn with some tears, but not very serious.
I test drove the car yesterday and it drives beautifully, I fell in love. But one thing that bothers me is that the owner says it needs new shocks in the front and struts in the back. I noticed that the car was making some kind of noise when I drove it, but I don't believe it was coming from the engine, and he said it was because of the shocks. I was able to feel every little bump on the road.
Does anyone know of a good rotary mechanic in the LA area? I'd like to have it checked before I purchase it, and of course when I do, I also want to install the shocks, which the owner said costs ~$100 plus labor. Thanks.

need pics to be sure...and get that noise checked out...it could be any number of things since you just described it as a noise not coming from the engine...but if it turns out to be as nice as you say it is...i would love an -se...id fork out the $3,500...

No way!!
I'm sorry I love my car but I don't think a GSL-SE with 139k miles is worth that much. Maybe if it had 39K I'd think about it. My friend just sold a nice GSL-SE for $1100 and it had RB springs.
take your time and look around man.

I just bought a gsl-se all options, very nice condition for 1200. It had a few mechanical issues, none serious, It has 139k. I wouldn't pay more than $2000, even then it had better be really nice car.

$3500 too high
In 1996 I paid that for my '85 GSL-SE with 102k in near mint condition! That was top dollar, but I got exactly what I was trying to find and the car has been my daily means of transportation since with very few minor repairs since. Now almost nine years later a very similar model with over 130k miles should be quite a bit less! And you said it needs shocks & Struts (Shocks are in the rear, and struts are in the front), plus the engine seems to make some noise? I'd tell the guy I'd give him $2,700 after he replaces shocks & struts, and fixes engine noise. ...actually you're probably better off telling the guy what the car is really worth and make him a reasonable offer. then wish him luck!

I just picked up my se for 1300 with brand new tokiko blue's, and rb springs. The body is super straight but the silver paint is oxidized. I'd pass and wait for a better deal. Let us know what you decide.

Too Much
The only way it would be worth that much is if it has some aftermarket parts and mods to the engine. I don't even think the blue book value is even that much, so you are better off finding another one - and trust me they are plenty of Rx7's out there. If I were you - I would spend 1500 on any nice looking 1st gen Rx7 (12a or 13b) and then replace the engine with the other 2k you have left over.
