85 GSL-SE Dies

Hello all, I know the answer is on here somewhere, but I cannot find it - so I am asking for your help. I have an 85 Rx7 that I use for autox in the San Diego area and I am having a problem where the engine will not stay running. It started out by stalling on the freeway at about 70 mph, and i was able to restart it in neutral and get home, but as soon as i got to my house it stalled out again and i could not to start back up for any extended period of time. Now it will crank and fire but only run for about 5 seconds (regardless of how far I am pushing the gas pedal) It just cuts out and then dies, rpm does not seem to be a factor...any ideas? It has plenty of gasoline in it so that is not the problem (first thing I checked). All in all it is very frustrating. The engine is a rebuild with 30k or so on it and the compression checked in at around 120 on each face and w/in 1psi front to back on the rotors so I don't believe that it is internal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

A bad trailing ignitor? It also triggers the ECU to open the fuel injectors. If you swap them (trailing and leading ignitors on the distributor) and it will start and run, though it will be hard to start and run like crap, that's the problem. Avoid hassles and get new or used from a VERY reliable source. Many bad ones for sale on Ebay.

Deducting that you have changed out the fuel filter within the last couple of years. I would start by doing a fuel pressure/volume test. And as newrxr has pointed out a bad trailing ignitor will be a problem. Start with the basics...

Also need to know if the motor still has the stock EFI or you are running a carb.

hey man, i bought an '85 se and ended up with the same prob., turns out, I had a bunch of crap in the gas tank, had to drop it, clean it, reseal it. Was only about a 30 min job to drop and reinstall, but took about a day for the tank to dry in the sun. When I dumped it out, (the crap, not the gas--make sure you drain that out first)I found chunks of rust and tank sealant in there that were about a half inch in diameter. There was also a bunch of it in the sock, and both the feul pickup line, and the return line. I cleaned them out by tapping them with a screw driver untill all the crap fell out. I hope your prob is a feul filter(you should hav etwo of them, one up front under your hood, and one next to your feul pump) but if it is this prob, you should invest in a pair of safety glasses, because a bunch of rust and stuff fell in my eyes when I did this the first time...
hope this helps
