Whine from pump, smell, hesitation, idle problems, huge “whoosh” and excessive tank pressure, all gone! One thing I have found with my SE is that Everything must be in “balance” for it to work properly. Having said all that, I am sure my charcoal canister can/should flow better air than what is does. Please follow up with your progress. It will be greatly appreciated, especially for those of us who want to keep our cars as stock as possible. Thanks in advanced.

Well, was able to take the car out for a drive yesterday evening to test the repair. I did about 20 miles of spirited driving with no issues. Fuel pump did not whine and car ran beautifully. As expected, there was a bit of pressure at the gas cap when I checked it after the ride. I know people have spoken about this being normal but not sure they knew why. The canister is not a blow through design. It's more of seep through flow. To better illustrate this just pull off the vent hose going into the canister and, with a flashlight, look at the orifice and how small the hole is in comparison to the rubber hose coming from the tank. With this hose disconnected while driving there is absolutely no pressure at the gas cap. I'm guessing that the engineers did not want a rush of vapors flooding the intake as they were sucked back into the motor. For this reason, there will always be a bit of pressure at the cap (unless you have bigger problems). So, if you are having the issues I stated in the original post, this is a simple and quick way to determine if the canister is your problem and how to remedy it. I will post back with an update as I continue to test the repair. A longer, hotter drive is in order to completely verify this solution.

[QUOTE=Toruki;12292688]We'll be needing an extensive photo album of that beautiful car.[/QUOT

Thank you. I have more but would hate to tie up this post with them. If interested, I could start a new thread with pics of the restoration.

Something to hold you over.......

Thanks for the update. I did notice recently that my gas tank pressure was getting higher again recently. I checked the line into the canister and there was little to no flow again. I just blew it again with shop air, and it flows some again. Plan on getting a spare canister and doing what you did to mine. I only hope it turns out well like yours. Again, thanks.
