Removing charcoal canister?
I was wondering if anyone has any input on removing the charcoal canister. I read through some old stuff, and found that removing it makes a nasty smell, but my car already smells bad. I was also looking at the lines the other day and I can't seem to figure out where the one connects to the fuel supply. I want to rid myself of this thing, but want some input before I do.
Is there any reason other than smell to keep this thing?

Not sure if the fuel vapors from the gastank will ignite without the charcole canister being attached. That would be my only concern.
I'm assuming the tank has to breath??

Here's a pic of my stripped engine bay..
Dead in the middle of the firewall, you see two metal hard lines. The top one is the brake booster vacuum line, that runs to a nipple on the lower intake manifold. The lower on, with a u shaped bend in it, is the fuel tank vent.
Look for that hardline on your car, and trace it over to the charcoal canister.
I wouldn't remove it, it's not really hurting anything, and you have to vent the fuel line, one way or another.

I got rid of mine and it never smells, but i did capp off the hard line coming from the fuel tank. Why would i have to vent it? Only thing i noticed was a big swoosh when i take off my fuel cap. Would pressurizing my fuel tank hurt my fuel pump or something?

Revvin7..
Ever try to open a can of cranberry sauce? Damn stuff won't come out of the can if you only open one side, right? What happens when you vent the other side of the can? Plop.. it comes right out.
Same principal. Fuel will come out of the tank, and if the cap is vented, you probably don't even need the line out of the tank (not sure if the cap is vented, but your statement that you get a big woosh seems to me that it's not), but if you don't have SOME kind of vent, you create a vacuum in the tank when you suck fuel out using a pump.

Does anyone know the real duty of this canister? Is it just to eliminate fuel vapors? Or does it keep the pressure inside the gas tank at a certain level? I don't care about the smell, but I do care about fuel pressure. If some of you guys have eliminated this and are running around with no trouble; I can only believe that this thing must not be too important. If anyone knows a good reason to keep it, please let me know. I appreciate all of the info so far, but it seems as if no one really knows for sure what the thing is for.

OK; the one line running across the engine bay comes from the tank and it needs to be vented. But what about the line coming out of the canister? Where does it go?
