Question 85 gsl rough below 3500

I just picked up a 1985 gsl it was in a junk yard for about 8 months.
It had 3 fuel filters on it ... and no gas to the carb. We took all the filters off and still didnt get gas it wasnt till after we tightened the fuel lines we got gas. But forgot to put a filter back on. The car drove amazing. No idle but didnt have any problems with power or low rpms it was very smooth, for about a mile and it bogged and died. wasnt getting gas to the carb again.

Towed it home put a filter on and new pump. Got gas but was running very rough from 4000 below. If i try to hold speed it sputters but when i start to get on it it smooths out and hauls ***. I also have to pump the gas about 5+ times to get it started. I have a new fuel pump and holley regulator. but someone put a rubber 3/8 line from the tank to the carb.

Any ideas?

THX, Daniel

I'm assuming its a nikki carb. Sounds like dirt in the carb. Try running some seafoam or
gumout thru it. You may have to rebuild the carb worst case. Is the tank clean or is it
got crap in it like rust or dirt thats getting sucked in. If the PO had 3 filters on it I would
suspect the tank was causing grief with stuff getting sucked thru the system. Also replace
all the rubber hose going to the tank itself as these get old and disintegrate dropping
small tiny rubber bits into the gas stream.

So you got "new" 7 already, good for you. I tore down that engine you sold me, the rear
rotor/housing were trashed but the front rotor/housing is good. The JBWeld on the front
housing is just chipping off, so looks like I can use it. Also put the FB dizzy I bought from
you in my SA with the new ignition and its runs great. See my TLIDFIS thread for details.

well, it definatly sounds like fuel starvation. first thing i would do is drop the tank. have the tank professionally cleaned and sealed. the tanks tend to build up with sludge over time and you will experience issues like this. you can remove the pickup assembly when the tank is out and look inside for debris and check the pickup strainer for clogging. you'll also want to get rid of that rubber fuel line. you cab buy aluminum fuel line from summit. it comes in a roll and you can easialy flare it and bend it to exact angles under the car. i would stay under 3/8" due to the stock carb setup not needing that large of a fuel line.

next you will probably want to rebuild the carb. its probably full of sediment and rebuilds are easy and the kit from black dragon is cheap at around $25.

Well i put seafoam in the carb bowls, gas tank, and a little in the oil. Should i let it soak? or just run it out?

Glad to see the motor and dizzy were of use to you. Anyone got a passenger fender for a 85?

Got her fixed. A vaccum leak on the intake manifold hid from me.
