85 GS wont start.....
Well my dad took my 7 out for a spin and when he brought it back i went to go use it and it was out of gas....(shouldn't I be making my parents car out of gas in the garage and not the other way around???) Anyway when I started it sounded like it was getting gasps of gas and while I was flooring it the tach was jumping all over the place. I tried again and I herd an electric humming which I assumed to be the fuel pump. It was bone dry for sure.
Anyway I went and filled up a to gallon gas tank and poured three fourths of it into the tank. I then poured a little bit of gas in to the primaries of the carb to prime it. Gave it a start and it just wouldnt go. I sounded like it was cranking ok but I i thought I heard little tiny bits of ignition (ya know the sound right before the engine fires up). So I tried starting it some more. Repeated the priming proceedure a few times but the thing just would not start.
Now I know that gunk from the gas tank could have been pulled into the lines since the tank was out, but it should have started and then died from the little amount of gas in the carb. I had to stop because I could hear the battery beginning to die so I gave it a rest for tonight.
What am I doing wrong here? Whats causeing this and how could I fix it? ANY info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You might be flooded.....Take your plugs out turn over the ignition forabout 10 sec. put your plugs back in pour a capfull of ATF in your primaries pump the gas a few times turn the ignition with the gas pedal all the way to the floor you should fire right up dont forget to pull the choke out when the car finally starts up you will puff a bunch of white smoke for a few mins.

When I ran out of gas the last two times (broken sender, and rusted tank....since been replaced) I just put two gallons in the tank, turned the key waited a couple of seconds so that the fuel pump would prime and started the car. After a couple of turn overs the car fired back up and both times were down to where you talk about when the tank is bone dry and you get bits of starts, tach all over then it dies dry. The engine even seemed to run better right before it died so now I'm wondering if I'm running too rich which I've been suspecting.

well, every time my car just wont start, I dump a little bit of gas intro the primaries (this is priming it... right?) and then it usually fires right up.
I talked to my dad about the flooding, and he said with his rx-2 what he would do keep the gas pedal to the floor and try to start it a bunch, he said this usally burns up enough fuel to fix the flooding.
yayo420 said i should use some atf (automatic transmission fluid) in the primaries as well. What purpose does this serve?

An 85 GS will not have the fuel pump running with just the key on. The motor has to either be running or cranking for the fuel pump to be on. See my post on "My latest useful mod" Otherwise, you could just jump the fuel pump to get it to prime the carb bowls. Don't pour raw gas down the primaries though.

well, i'm not to concerned about the carb, as I'm going to be swaping in my 89 engine and the fuel injection in three weeks anyway. The car just needs to be able to get to my auto shop.
well anyway why exactly do I need the auto trans fluid in the carb tho?
