'85 automatic to standard conversion

I've got a chance to get a nice '85, only problem is that it's an automatic. Okay, I've read Felix's How-Do-I and a few cautionary threads and I'd still like to do it, but I have a few questions:
  • Why do I need a replacement brake pedal?
  • Apparently, the four speed auto requires an adapter plate, but how can I tell if the car is a four speed or three speed auto? I assume that the difference is that the four speed has an overdrive. How can I tell if it has an overdrive?
If anyone else has completed this conversion, do you have any tips to share? Thanks!

By the way, you need a different brake pedal because the auto pedal is wider than the 5 speed pedal.
