84SE - Cruise Control problem... ctxt
Okay, guys - I need a little bit of help here.
Just within the past week, the cruise control (CC) has started doing some very strange things:
A) It won't 'set' correctly, instead accelerating as if I'm pressing the accelerator,
B) It won't 'cancel' with the clutch pedal or brake pedal - instead it seems to slow, but as soon as you put your foot on the gas to speed it, it starts accelerating by itself (see A, above...), and,
C) It does this until I switch off the CC master switch on the dash.
I decided to pull the driver's side bin to look for water damage or anything else that could case a problem with the CC, and all that I found was that some brake fluid had leaked from a container that I keep in the bin and had soaked the sound deadening material. I cut out the soaked section and left the bin out to dry off - threw away the leaky container.
I'm thinking that the brake fluid bath has caused a problem with the electronic control module for the CC, but the 'accelerating' behavior is a new one on me.
Anyone else had this problem or something similar? Anyone want to sell me their CC control module from behind the driver's seat?
TIA,

Wow, guess I don't have much to offer at the moment, but is there any chance that the connections are being shorted/crossed by the brake fluid? Hmm, will brake fluid even conduct electricity? Anyway, that's what came to mind for me.... Good luck Duck!
damn...now that i think about it...i tried to use my cc last weekend and it didn't work on my way down to VA...i didn't think much about it
then when i got back i found LOTS of water in my rear hatch area and in the spare well...i wonder if there's water in the bins that shorted out the cc

Is that what the box under the bin is?
As for brake fluid getting in there, try getting some electrical contact cleaner, and spraying the connector and the control box plug. Allow it to dry before reconnecting. I don't know about spraying the control box, but that stuff is actually designed to be used on electronics, therefore it shouldn't harm anything.

Took the module out last weekend and found it to be bone dry. The CC is causing acceleration under all conditions, so I'm thinking more that it's a vacuum leak somewhere that's causing the CC accelerator to think that the engine vacuum pressure is dropping off and to pick up the throttle to maintain speed.
Anyone want to donate their CC related solenoids to me (3 from the passenger front firewall), for a small fee, plus shipping?
Let me know - I use my CC every day and am really missing it now. TIA,

I've got the brain and the accelerator, and probably the relays, switches and solenoids in the garage from my 83 that I pulled years ago in working fashion. PM me any offer and it's yours, it's just taking up space here.

Something you might want to try if your CC is intermittent is to push on the Cruise Control Master Switch (by the lighter socket) on and off repeatedly and quickly about 20 times.
Usually, an intermittent circuit is caused by corroded contacts on a switch, and running the switch on and off repeatedly will usually clean them up enough that it will work correctly again. If, when the CC is working, it works 100% correctly, this is probably it. You might also want to check the fuse for your Cruise Control at the fuseblock to see if you have a corroded contact there - that would also cause the CC to come on and off at weird times.
Hope this helps, and several PM's sent on buying the solenoids and 'brains' to both of you guys, above. Thanks for offering,
