84 rx wont start, PLEASE HELP!

I have just replaced the waterpump and had rebuilt the carb a few weeks ago. I got everything hooked back up and now she wont start. The car dident run when i got it either a few months ago. it ran for a few minutes the other day and it smoked like hell. We adjusted the mixture screw down and it ran pretty good and dident smoke, but it would die the second you let off the gas. I followed the carb kit to a tee and it was the second one I have rebuilt. I rechecked the float levels tonight and they are set to specs. I had also checked the vaccum diagram to a tee also. It will start and run for a second or two but dies, it seems like it is flooding out, and most of the time you have to start it with starting fluid. I am boggled and am running out of ideas. If anyone has any ideas on what it might be please let me know, thanks!

i would check your plugs and make sure both your leading plugs are firing....when any car im working on stops running i always check three things first...ignition, fuel, and air.

Yeah hes right.....Dont forget your fuel pump and fuel pump relay under the dash!(if it is triggered and doesnt flip back, then your fuel pump wont run)-you can by-pass it if you want-PM me and Ill tell you how.

And if they are firing then you might to try taking the intake manifold off and making sure your gasket is good b/c if it isnt it will suck in coolent through your air/fuel and will start and run good, but wont want to stay running.

This reminds me of when mine sat for a while. It would not start for anything. Then when I had the key on I could not hear the fuel pump at all, so I checked the fuses, and the fuel pump fuse was indeed blown, replaced it, and problem solved.

Maybe its just running on the starting fluid when you spray in there? The spark (in theory) should be ok, because if theres no spark it wouldnt run at all.

Perhaps its just simple as bad or watery gas?

Hope this helps, just some ideas, I know its sooooo easy to overlook the easiest things first

I have already replaced the fuel pump and the fuel tanks is from another car, I cleaned it out while it was off, and all new fuel lines. It is getting spark. Fuel pump is pumping fuel, but the plugs did look like crap. Im going to try new plugs and more tweaking on the mixture screw tomorrow . Thanks for the advice.

Clean your plugs and save the new ones for when the trouble shooting is over. Take the air cleaner lid off and see if it's flooding with the pump energized. If it's running out above the venturis, plug in the fuel solenoid under the fuel supply. Have it plugged in, try the other plug.
