84 rx-7 gsl first mods

My brother has an 84 rx-7 gsl stock. i would like to know what are the first mods he should be concentrating on getting. I can't give him much help because I drive a 91 mr-2 so rotary is a whole new thing for me. I think he said that he has an oil leak so he is working on that.
Any guidance towards the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks.

do a search....u could start by taking the rats nest off if u've already passed emissions...and take the catalytic convertor off cuz it's prolly cooked from the inside....if u don't need the A/C take the A/C pump off...this will not give u any barely any hp gains but it will give u a lot of space to work with in the engine bay....for more info on the rats nest removal see the www.mazspeed.com tutorial it's pretty detailed. after ur done these mods u might wanna invest in a header from racing beat and a new intake manifold with either a rebuilt stock nikki carb or an aftermarket dellorto/webber/holley/mikuni carb....that should get ur hp up to 155....after that u might wanna set up a direct fire ignition system using coild froma second gen 7 or using MSD boxes...do a search on it a lot of people have done it....or pm v8kilr he can help u....have fun rotarying

later,
Gufran

Yeah, my sig is the link to the tutorial. If you're in an emission-less state, go straight to free flowing header and exhaust. Racingbeat makes good ones.

Good luck to your brother.

We have emissions test here in Illinois so he can't take the nests out. will he get good results by switching to high-flow cats?

Also, for my 91t mr2 you could go with a custom exhaust. Do you guys also have that option with rx-7s? Is backpressure necessary for the 7s?

1. First off get that leak fixed or figure out where its coming from.

Then do the mods:

1. Racing Beat exhaust - or just headers.

http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=16012

2. Remove Air Pump, Get Dual Pully, Higgi has a cool rotor shapped one for $40. search for HIGGI

3. Good Plugs NGK, BR8EQ14,
http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=11517

Just a few for now.

Do yo guys know where we can get instructions on how to replace seals on the rx-7? Someone told him that he might have to replace all of the seals on his 7 to fix the oil leak problem.

what seals? the apex seals and o rings and other such stuff would require a complete engine rebuild

I would suggest doing things in this order,

1- fix everything, make sure everything is in top notch working order, without that your wasting your time.

2- get at least a racing beat header, new pipe to the rear and aftermarket muffler

3- rebuild nikki carb, remove shutter valve and butterfly, port match intake to carb "the stock intake is one sorry piece of work" the must be done with step 4

4- remove emmisions equiment on carb "do a search", remove what is not needed any more in rats nest "you will need to keep a couple things so dont go crazy rippen **** out before you read", remove air pump and ACV and place a block off plate in its place "$6 www.mazdatrix.com"

5- upgrade fuel system, both carter and holley pumps are commonly used by people on this forum, do a search to see which is best for you. you will also need a fuel pressure gauge and regulator

6- upgrade ignition system, msd coils are very common "blaster 2 series" , I plan for my next setup to be the blaster ss. later you could go direct fire as well. There are several direct fire setups so do some reading first to find out which will suit you "your budget" best, and remember you can always upgrade later.

hope that helps

ditto, but I am sure he is talking about the side seals "still would have to rebuild the motor"

maybe his first mod should be a street port then

Well I'll have to talk to him and find out what is wrong with his motor as far as the oil leak. I might have to look for the leak myself since he is not very knowledgable about engines. I am very good with the 3s-gte on my mr-2 but rotary is a whole different game to me.

Where is the leak coming from. I used to have an oil leak that I trace to one of the rubber hoses on my oil metering pump. I just cut off the section that was split and replaced the hose and I've been good since

He is going to keep the car in my garage while he tries to fix it so I will be able to look at it closely to see what's up. I saw at an autoparts store a pair of eyeglases with a special flash light that you are supposed to use to find leaks. It might be for coolant leaks. Do these things work?

Yeahi have an oil leak and it looks like it is coming directly from under the oilpan... so i am going to try and replace teh gasket and see if that does teh trick.

We are at the North-West side by Armitage and Kostner.
Well my brother lived there with my parents but he has moved out. He still lives in that area I think. He just moved and I have not gone to his new place yet. I don't know where the leak is coming from so I have to look at it miself because I don't think my brother knows where it is coming from. All I know is that he did an oil change on the car and in a week almost all of the oil was gone.
