84 gsl streetport

Ok so a buddy and I rebuilt my 84 12a and streetported it (medium-heavy). Well I have been having problem getting it to idle under 1600 rpms, so i figure it must be a vacum leaks so I search every where (rats nest is gone) and no there is no vacum leak cant be anywhere but still it wont idle lower. when I get it lower it just sputters and stalls, so I figure it could be timing right?? Then the other thing is under acceleration it sort of makes a clicking poping sound, what does this mean anyone know??

Sounds like timing is too advanced and engine is pinging, and pinging is very bad! Check that timing before you drive again, lest you break an apex seal.

You used a template for the port, right? If you just go doing guess-work, you could have messed up the timing, or something like that which I don't completely understand.

Also, I've never had my headers turn bright red after just a 'short drive' and I have a mild/aggressive streetport. How long was this 'short drive?'

Yes we used a slighly modfied rb template the smae template had been secessfully used in several engine before. short drive as in uder 10 mins down the road and back giving her pretty good but still I dont think it should be that red prob has somthing to do with the timing

Wow, yeah, adjust that timing, man. You shouldn't be glowing bright after ten minutes. If I can leave my house, go to pick up my bro from school down the road, and catch a race on the way (GOOD race, pushing the car HARD), all in the span of about twenty minutes, and the headers not be TOTALLY red (like I'm sure you're describing) then you may have a problem

Yah I think the timing must be set far to advance for the amount of fuel the stock nikki is putting in. the air fuel mixture must way out of way with the spark to advanced so yah i guess i do have problems

how about your exhaust. Are you still running cat? Its funny how everyone assumed its timing. I dont feel it has anything to do with timing. If the engine is not timed properly, that engine will stil idle but in his case, it wont idle below 1600 and he didnt mentioned any problem with acceleration (past idle stage). Based on that I say, your carb is fucked. The problem could be in clogged channels or its in your linkage.

BTW: Junk that nikki and get a real carb like a 48 IDA. Thats when you say OH ****!!!!!!

Way lean would also lead to spark knock. It also explains the cherry red headers. Do yourself a favor and buy a carb that flows more fuel and air.

Doh! I don't know why carb didn't cross my mind! And I'm always the first to point my finger at that Nikki bitch!
Try adjusting your mixture, and if that don't work, get a Sterling or better. I forgot to mention that my car didn't like running on my stock Nikki.
