84 GSL-SE Dumping Fuel

Trying to help my lazy son with his car. The problem was that it was sucking down fuel and wouldn't take throttle. Car would surge going down the highway at constant throttle. Also had poor acceleration except at certain throttle positions. I suspected the TPS and intake. (I did a compression check, all was good). After doing a search I came up with a post by David Lane on solving GSL-SE Idle and intake problems. His post seemed to confirm my diagnosis so I went about the steps outlined in his post. Got as far as cleaning the air adjustment screw and checking the operation of the air flow meter. I was trying to check the TPS but couldn't go any further because the car won't start at all now. I pulled the plugs and injected some TM oil to try and dry her out, but it's dumping fuel like WOT. Tried disconnecting the TPS to see if it made any difference, it didn't. Also if anyone could help diagnose, I did the test to determine if the TPS was bad as described in "Testing for a bad TPS" The readings I got were 2 k closed and 4 k WOT. According to the post they should be 1 k closed and 5 k WOT. Does this mean I need a new TPS? Checked with Ray Crow at Malloy he needs $135 for a new TPS so I would like a second opinion to be sure it's bad before spending money for a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

How do you like yours with the carbs. I owned an 81 years ago and ran two weber one barrels. I really liked it, but it wasn,t a fuel injection to carb conversion. How hard is it to do and can you tell me what your setup is.

the carb conversion we did on my buddies se. real simple to do, carbs are a little pricey though. just slap the carb on, run the omp lines to the carb and where the injectors plug in (or just plug the injector holes) then there is some wiring to do for the fuel pump, which you also will need to change out to a low pressure type unit. we did that for a racing beat 600 holley. i run a dellorto 48dhla, rb also. conversion is real easy to do.

I would suggest cleaning or checking your AFM soon. If the AFM is saying to the computer that there is high air flow then it would dump more fuel.

Have you tried pulling codes from the ECU? It'll tell you which of the sensors are bad...

There's a good post on it...

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the post. I may be intrested in that TPS for $40.00. Let me do a little more research. Also does anyone have a link to a good post regarding doing a FI to carb conversion on an 84 GSL-SE. Thanks
