Looking at buying a new fuel pump. Should i just stick with a stock replacement or upgrade and just get a regulator. If I go with stock anybody know of any good replacements for it.

GS so i'm guessing 12A, just replaced my fuel pump this week, though mine already had an aftermarket one installed.

For simplicity sake, you could just get a replacement stock. They are out of production, but apparently the 79-82 fuel pump will fit. Just looks a bit different.

79-85 Rx7 Fuel Pumps

I have a Carter Universal fuel pump in mine, runs at 5-9 PSI, so you'd have to run a regulator. Luckily mine already had one installed, just adjusted it last night to about 3.5 PSI. If you plan on porting later on, you might as well go big.

BTW I bought that stock pump off Atkins without knowing mine had an aftermarket one installed. If you're close to Austin, I could just sell it to you.

I just recently got into rotary's, so anyone else with more knowledge may jump in.

The mounting for the pump is a little different for the 79-82 fuel pump and the line placement is slightly different. However, it will work in an 84-85 car and no fuel pressure regulator will be necessary. You'll just have to adapt the 84-85 mounts to the earlier pump and modify one fuel line.

On the other hand, you can just post a want to buy ad in the classifieds section here on the forum and I'm sure someone has a good 84-85 fuel pump handy.

This is what I did a few years back. Got the factory 79-82 and used on my 1985. Had to reroute the lines a little and adapt the mounts.

Thanks, more than likely going to try and get a stock replacement, dont want to mess with the lines. But i do have a question. So the two screws that have little rubber donut on them how did you manage to take them off?

Mine had an aftermarket fuel pump installed when I bought it, so unfortunately I'm not sure

The mounts use two 6x1.0 bolts with a 10mm head, not screws. They mount the pump to the fuel pump mounting plate and the rubber allows for a little shock absorption.

how did you have to modify the fuel line. Been looking for a fuel pump but havent been able to find one, so im probably going to be getting an aftermarket.

www.mazdatrix.com has the original 79-82 fuel pump for $102. Both lines are at a 90 degree angle on the early fuel pumps and only one is at a 90 degree angle on the later pump. You'll just have to modify that one straight line and install a molded 90 there. Much easier than trying to rig up an aftermarket pump.
