84 13b oil metering pump rod reinstall

I have an 84 GSL-SE that I'm attempting to get back on the road after installing a new engine. I can't quite figure out how to reattach the oil metering pump rod @ the oil metering pump. I've got the rod attached to the lever, however I cannot figure out how to secure the fitting once through the lever. I'm sure someone else has run across this one. Any suggestions on how to approach?

Thanx,

Bob

Mine uses a washer and a cotter pin at the very bottom of the linkage.

Also very important here is that the 'slack' between the cotter pin (very small pin, at that), and the lever arm at it's resting position.

This MUST be set at 0-1mm, no more, no less. Any more slack, and your engine will not get enough oil pumped along with increased engine rpm. Any less and you'll be pumping too much.

The OMP is a very hardy part and seems to be overengineered by Mikuni (yep, the same company that builds the carbs on 12a cars). This pump is essentially a small piston pump system which changes the pump flow by varying the cylinder length. As that lever moves, it operates a cam that adjusts the cylinder bore length, allowing for a longer piston stroke and more oil to be pumped. There is a small rotating shaft on the engine side that's driven by the distributor gear and rotates the internal mechanism of the OMP. This then pumps oil through the 4 ports (13b EFI has 4, carb has 2), up to the squirters on the intake manifold (2) and on the rotor housings (2). This provides oil to the airstream on the primary side, and to the rotor apex seals themselves.

An interesting aside is that Mazda removed the 'flow-test' from the 84 Factory Service Manual, as it was found that if the pump 'preload' distance (that 0-1mm between rod and pin, adjusted via washer) was enough to guarantee that the OMP was pumping the proper amount. This is a very small amount, however, so don't be surprised if can't see it 'flow' through the clear tubes.

HTH,

Probelm restatement

First - thanx for the responses.

Next - Guess I didn't explain it well enough. I'm looking for a solution on how to attach the cylindrical fitting that sits on the oil metering pump rod to the oil metering pump. Looks as thogh this initially was riveted on, are there any work-arounds that anyone has come up with?

Thanx,

Bob
