83 RX7...thinking of biting the performance bullet...anyone else?
Hey people...I am thinking about pulling the trigger on some performance upgrades to my 83 1st gen (93,000 original miles). Now that Sterling Metal Works is back modifying carbs, I want to put a Sterling modified Nikki on...a new higher flow fuel pump...and a Bonez hi flow cat and some new exhaust piping. This is a summer daily driver and I still want it to be emissions compliant.
Has anyone else done these same things? I am curious how it worked out and if there are any pitfalls to watch out for because it is a decent amount of money to be spent.
Thanks,
Todd

haha, rotary motors are like a drug, curious to try it in the first place due to price, but once you take the plung you become an addict spending every last cent on it.

I love my Sterling.
I'm pretty sure he can set you up with a carb which is intended to still pass emissions. Add a Carter fuel pump and a Holley pressure regulator and you'll be all set...

One question I have after reading a LOT of posts on here. Are all the "daily driver" guys taking off their catalytic converters and putting straight pipe exhausts on for more performance? Or is it mostly the racing guys? I know it is a very common pairing...to put in free flowing exhausts (with no cat) in along with higher performance carbs. In Minnesota, we no longer have to worry about emission tests. Or is the RX7 efficient enough at burning everything with more airflow and a modified carb to where it won't make that much difference with or without the converter?

If you don't have emissions, just run a straight pipe or presilencer in it's place. The set up on my SA dailydriver is RB SP header collected and straight piped to an RB power pulse muffler. Gives great power on my stock carb with an RB air box and direct fire on it.

Of course he will. I went with the RB SP exhaust and about a week later wanted more power, so I went with a Sterling. Sterling says it's almost done so I'll post my review after DGRR if it's here in time.

I have a '80 SA that I have been using as a DD for the last 6 months. All the emissions are gone simply because most of that stuff was junk and would have needed to be replaced or repaired to make operable. It was easier and cheaper to remove than fix. The old girl gets 17-18mpg around town, and 22-24mpg on the interstate. Only mods are direct fire second gen coil. E-fan. Racing Beat header. Stripped, mechanical secondarys, and rebiult Nikki. Still rocks with the best of them .
