83' Main Pulley Timing Marks

For anyone who's interested, here is what racing beat recommends for a street port 12A

Also included is what the main pulley marks mean on an 83'

Hope this helps someone out, enjoy

the real question is if its a locked dizzy or not....I would suspect that is the case as they are setting the timing at 5K vice idle, but the OP needs to be a little more specific, what carbs, exhaust, porting mods etc. without these the post is meaningless.

Setting at 5k is to set the timing at maximum mechanical advance. Really, full mechanical advance is in by about 4k or so, but setting it at 4500 or 5k will ensure that you are at full mechanical advance.

wow, what would you like to know?

12A street port, racing beat header, single pre-silencer, and exhaust
Racing Beat Holley 465
No rats nest
Vacuum advance on the dizzy is not hooked up, pulled off of whatever vacuum you use (manifold or ported) just make sure that it is capped when you run the engine

Setting the timing at 5000 is to get above the mechanical advance, high i know... just being super safe

Did I miss anything?

Anyone that does not have an 83 engine, be wary. The main pulley marks changed, I believe around 81 or 82. Anything before that I have never looked in to.

I posted this information because I spent a few hours searching around for something to say exactly what I needed... I didn't find anything, so when I got some good info I posted it so others would benefit

One last note,

I asked about using the vacuum advance that is on the side of our dizzy's and the guy at racing beat said not to use it.... ever

But I did get him to tell me that If I am to use it, all it does is improve fuel economy, marginally.

Kenetsu if you're reading this you should be smiling at this point. He also seemed very surprised when I asked about using a ported vacuum source, he specifically said to use manifold vacuum (if the advance is hooked up at all)

For those of you that are wondering, manifold vacuum is the source that your brake booster and cruise control pull from.

Please do not turn this thread into a manifold vs ported argument. This is a recommendation from racing beat, not my personal opinion

I don't care either way. Personally when I get my car up and running I'll try out both ways and use which ever way suits my driving habits.

After reading through the instructions a few times, I was incorrect in my first post

The idle should be set at idle with those settings.

I'm running
25 deg BTC Leading
15 deg BTC trailing
at full mechanical advance with no vacuum hooked up

My bad about posting information before completely understanding it myself, shouldn't blindly trust someone just because they work for any company...

The timing I just listed seems to give nice smooth power and a decently smooth idle at 1000 rpm

have a good one
