WA 83 gsl carb/vac whine?? VIDEO

Hey guys,

Unfortunate I have to introduce myself this way, but just picked this 83 gsl a couple weeks back, and was running great, until started getting this going:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSC_9I1C9w0

Runs/sounds like that at idle, and will hardly stay running.

I can keep it going by gassing it and it drives fairly normally (although a lot more backfiring than normal), but I don't want to take it too far like this. I'm thinking some kind of vacuum leak but wanted to see what all you expert folk thought. It's fairly annoying, and is very apparently coming from the intake/carb. Took the cover off and the noise got louder, per the video.

thanks for the help in advance.

The previous owner removed the air pump -

Found the source of the loud noise: it is made silent when this hose is plugged. I can't quite tell what the other end of the hose goes into, however. Little unit that sits right below the carb adjustment ****. Car runs fine above 2.5-3k. Anyone have any clue?

that's weird about the link. it works fine for me, but i realize that doesn't do anything for you. anyway, as i said, this would have been my second guess at your issue, but with your photo i'm fairly sure now.

i guess the next question is what to do with it. you still have your rat's nest, so am i correct in assuming you plan to keep all that stuff?

from what i remember of them, they seem to be pretty simple mechanical devices, so i would imagine it probably can be repaired. however, don't ask me how. i'm usually in the habit of removing them.

Sounds like it's just sucking air/ vacuum leak. Just plug/ cap off that port.. See if idle is better

My shutter valve is also broken and stuck wide open. Would it suffice to just cap both ports on the valve instead of taking everything apart?

I don't know man..i took it to a rotary mechanic near my house and dropped it off yesterday. I'd rather get it fixed to operate correctly. Wanna sell this thing before the summer is over. it's too clean xD
