Question 83 Fuel Problems or something else?

Ok heres the situation I have. Theres fuel in the tank. The fuel pump comes on when the key is turned on. Fuel is delivered to the carb (I pulled the hose and watched it pump out). I set the floats and there is gas in the bowls. (also cleaned the jets and what not when I had the top of the carb off) When I move the throttle cable there is some gas that can be seen being sprayed into the primarys. The car will only start if I pour some gas in the carb, then it runs till the gas is gone. If I keep pouring a bit of gas in the carb at this time I can keep it running, without pouring gas in there it will just die. I have checked the spark on all the plugs and is good. Like I said it will run as long as someone keeps pouring gas in there. I'm not a complete idiot so I would figure this is a fuel related (starved) situation. I dont know much about the rotary. I guess I'm just looking for some advice from all you rotoXperts. I drove the dam thing home from where I bought it for $300. and the motor sounds nice with no noises when its running (and back to the pouring gas in the carb) blah blah blah...Why wont this darn thing run??? maybe I am more of an idiot than I think and I am missing the obvious. So how bout some input from you all.........

Welcome Mike, the forum.

The first thing I would check is the fuel filter. Perhaps it is not allowing enought fuel to get to the carb.

Just a thought and it might be a quick cheap fix.

How about the little filter screens in the fuel inlet?
Also, if your float bowls are maintaining the proper level when the car is running, then the problem is probably with your carb, but if the float bowls are emptying out, it's most likely the delivery system. I'm currently waging war with my own fuel system, the carb is fine, it's the tank and specifically the pickup tube that have been giving me problems. The worst part is the problems with the tank seem to crop up right after I've been "monkeying" with the car. Last time it was shortly after I washed the hell out of my motor, now it's a half-day after I "power foamed" the engine internally. So I get to freak out wondering what the hell I DID to make this happen, but it turns out to be totally unrelated. Very unpleasant feeling. Anyway, good luck gettin' 'er figured out, I'm curious to know what it turns out to be.
Fuel system problems seem to be a fairly common theme around here, the newest of these cars are almost 20 years old!

Ok I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the screens going into the carb. The bowls maintain the fuel and dont empty out. It does try to start if I pump it a few times and turn it over it fires up for just a second maybe 2 then dies no matter where I put the choke or what I do with the gas pedal. It must be in the carb..something.. but it does spray into the primarys. I cleaned the plugs and even turned it over with them out to make sure no excess gas or whatever was in there. man it wants to run but gosh darn it just doesnt. lol. I will fiddle with it more tommorow and will keep checking the message board and posting my results. I have checked the vacume lines for cracks etc. is there any specific lines that would be doing this?? hell if I know..

maybe....

okay i did some research on the web and learned that american cars with the same symptoms may have a broken "crank position sensor" or "crank sensor." is there a similar part in the rotary? if so i bet thats it.

Could the gas be bad, and maybe you need to drain it and refill with new gas? Just an idea, sorry if it's already been mentioned.

If the car has been sitting, your gas has probably gummed up in the carb. If your bowl is not emptying
the gas is not getting past the main jets. These go in from the side. I don't think you can get to these with the carb in the car. I had this same problem until I told the carb COMPLETELY APART and cleaned it.

Well I guess I will take the carb off . I think its a gummed up situation. Theres alot of linkages and I'm hoping its not to hard to reconnect everything. Anyone know where theres an online exploded carb diagram for the Nikki 4bbl ?? I dont have a manual maybe someone could email me a scan diagram from they're manual, that would be cool

I got the carb off took about a whole 30 minutes. Now will I have to seperate the middle section from the lower section to get at those main jets that Stripgear was talking about? This carb is an albatros looking mo fo thing lmaooo
