82 TII project - Oily intercooler, how can I clean it out.

I just got my 87 Volvo intercooler. Looks like its going to fit really well.

I got it on ebay for $17. Its in like new condition. Not one bent fin, and holds 25psi no leaks.

But it has oil on the inside. What should I use to clean it out.

I think the core is alluminum but its painted. And the sidetanks are plastic.

Ill get some pics of my progress when I get it installed.

I should get my engine by march.

I just bought this stuff for flushing transmission coolers. It's called Kooler Kleen by Lube Gard. I'm going to use it on my engine air oil cooler. It comes in an aerosol can with a tube coming out the top that has a fitting attached to the end. Maybe you can use this stuff?

I was going to use a stock volvo intercooler in my 13bt conversion. Mine was really dirty. I cleaned it with mineral spirits from the home depot paint department. Poor it in one side then tape off the endtanks shake it up real good and let it sit for an hour. After cleaning it looked brand new inside. I would not use laquer thinner becuse it will damage the plastic end tanks. I love simple green but I would not use it to clean out the intercooler because oxidizes aluminum if it sits which will happen once it gets in the core of the intercooler.

i was thinking gas also.

Mineral spirits sounds like the way to go.

RX-7-8593, is the volvo intercooler alluminum? If it is, would it be worth it to strip the paint off the core.

Yes it is aluminum. Im using two of them welded together and left the core black. On the haltech datalog the highest my air temp has ever got was 95deg at 14psi so I dont think striping the paint would make much differance.
