82 oil cooler line removal

I am trying to remove the oil cooler lines from my oil cooler on a 82 rx7. I know I need a 21mm wrench to hold the adapters while you remove the banjo bolts. What size wrench do I need to buy to fit the banjo bolts. I have read anywhere from 23 to 27mm.

I used a cresent to get the lines to the oil cooler removed but my cresent will not fit on the small length cooler line were it attaches to the engine. The damn wrench is to big to fit in the space.

You will find that even an open end wrench is too thick. I had to thin mine on the bench grinder to get it to fit.

To get to the line at the engine you have to jack it up. Support the engine on a jack and remove the bolts for the engine mount and the cross member. Then its just little turns after little turns, it will come off. PB Blaster will help alot also.

No need to say wow. It only takes 5 minutes to jack the engine and get the bolts off. It will save you alot of time and frustration.

Ok I bought a 23mm open end wrench to remove the lines. Guess what the wrench is to small It looks as if the size is 24 or 25mm. Does anyone know for sure what size to buy?

It looks like trochoid handed out some bad advice... AGAIN!! lol kidding Scott.

You should have told him to get a 26mm as I believe that is the correct size. As mazdaverx713b said, 1 1/16 is pretty close and I wish I had one or a 26mm kicking around. It's next on the 'to get' list.

I have been getting by with a Diamond brand adjustable wrench.

As for the 23mm, I have one of those. It comes in handy for the banjo bolt one the rear plate. Maybe that's what trochoid thought you were talking about. liondogs, you shouldn't have called them banjo bolts. There is only one banjo bolt on a 1st gen, and it's at the bottom corner of the rear plate.

um, I used a 27mm wrench. We're talking about the end of the hose and not the fitting, correct?

I tried with a crescent wrench, it was too thick and kept slipping, pissed me off for over an hour. Got a 27mm, turned with ease and popped right off.

Sorry if this adds to the confusion.

Maybe it's 27mm. I'd need to measure one to be sure.

Ok, yes, 23 mm is for the banjo bolt as for the flare nut at the other end of that steel oil line. The adapter fitting takes a 21 mm, which is the one I needed to thin.

Not all wrenches are made equal. For example, I have some K-D line wrenches, they are twice as thick in the head as the cheap *** Blackhawks are. Sometimes size does matter, lol. Can't help with the oil line fitting sizes as I use one of my grandfather's heavy duty crescent wrenches that's over 50 years old. It's still better than the new ones.
