79 Limited update

OK guys! We finally made time to try your suggestions.

Update:
Oil is good and clean, no water.
Carb is clean, no significant gumming or corrosion.
Removed trailing plugs and added MMO to carb.
Moved engine some by hand to be sure it wasn't siezed. Engine still has good compression and was too difficult to move by hand so we removed ignition wires and with a new battery the starter will spin the engine.

Are we doing the right thing?
Good sign?
How long should we continue this process? Can't wait to hear my baby purr.

Beginning of rebuild pics should be up on the web before the weekend is over.

Hopeful in VA,
Ilesha

Sounds like you're making progress on getting your SA up and running. After they've sat for awhile, it's always a good practice to have a fire extinguisher nearby on that initial start - you may find that the fuel lines have gotten old and brittle and the engine vibration will crack through when it starts up. You'll know right away from the smell.

Based on this thread, and your other about the pictures, you should be fine. The MMO in there right now should increase compression for that first start, so don't accidentally flood it when you go to start it up. Better to turn it over a few times and let it catch than flood it and have to pull the plugs to dry it out.

The fact that the engine is difficult to turn at TDC is a good sign that the seals are in good shape. When the engine gets old, it will lose compression due to the seals not doing their job as they rub past the flaking chrome on the internal housings.

I'm curious to see how this goes - be sure to post back,

I'm curious too! I'll let the MMO work on those seals this week and we'll try to turn her over next weekend. Fire extinguisher in hand<G>

You can be sure I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks,
Ilesha
