79 to 84 dizzy switching
i'm an idiot on this stuff. how do i wire in the 84 dizzy and igniters? is there any shaft alignments that i need to do when putting in the dizzy. i have it all sitting here but i'm not sure how to do it without blowing anything up and/or not starting.

Very very simple
Trash the stock dizzy, the points etc, and coils, along with ballast crap
Install the coils, install the dizzy, run wires from the trailing ignitor to the trailing coil observing polarity, theres a (+) and a (-) on the igniters
(+) goes to 12V ign
Repeat same for the leading coil
Done, enjoy no mucking around with points

ok, there are 2 relays that the 79 has that the 81-84 don't have. can i bridge these or do i need to keep them? i don't want to bypass them and fry something, but the haynes doesn't show them for anything else. i know how to bypass these and wire it up 84 spec. just don't want to fry anything.

So I might have missed something, but a quick look at the wiring of a 81 up will reveal the secret

ok, did the switch per the mazdatrix doodle picture. i have no tach reading and my car lopes like its cammed. i thought maybe i had the dizzy off so i took it out realigned it and placed it back in. had it right. need some better answers or i'm just going to have to stick with points for a while longer. the mazdatrix thing was not that great. i left the 4 post ballast hooked up per stock as it really didn't say to unhook any of it.

All I did when I did it was run 4 wires from the coils to the dizzy straight to the coils

Its been a long time, but I doubt thats its really that hard, just look at a 81up wiring schematic. It all should be right there

I can help ya Monday night

damnit. i had the wires left coming off of the igniters. took those and pulled them over to the coils. i took the two external resisters and put the wires on the bottom studs for a simple connection for them. i left the third with all its connections intact as that is what the paper appeared to call for. arrghhhhhhhhhh.

My car runs on the trailing plugs.Jeremy, it does sound like you might have a dead leading ignitor. I guess there's only one way to find out.

I dunno what the hell they mean about leaving the existing wiring and ****. When I wired mine I removed all that crap (remember the 80 has a crappy box on the drivers strut tower)... All I had was 4 wires running from the dizzy to the coils
And by the way, the tach works off the trailing, not the leading
I think, well I know the 2nd gen does. And my tach was hooked to the trailing coils negative on my 85. Isnt blue significant of trailing?

not the 79 mike. yellow/blue is leading and yellow/green is trailing on the newer. yellow/green is leading and yellow/red is trailing on the 79. yet both used the yellow/green wire for tach signal.
revhed- it does smooth out if i adjust the timing completely advanced.
