You can basically use the 84-85 model LSD rear end, but you will need the driveshaft too. You should get the brake lines/ebrake cable aswell. Thats basically it

All you need is an 81 to 83-1/2 small axle lsd differential. It's a direct swap and shipping the gearset only, with pinion nut and flange untouched, will save a bundle on shipping. To use the 83-1/2 and later diff, you would need the entire rearend, rear brake cables and the driveshaft.

Keep an eye on the parts for sale section, they come up occasionally. I rarely run across them myself. Shipping could get pricy to Argentina.

Dont mean to steal the thread but, lets say I have a 79 rear end currently and I have a 81 lsd complete rear. Can I just use the pumpkin and the disk brake setup from the 81 and use the 79 axles?

Why dont you just swap in the whole 81 rear? It seams like that would be the easier option. If you just want the LSD you can just take the center from the 81 and put it in the 79 rear end.

The brackets on the 81 rear are severely bent and I don't want to weaken the brackets by heating them up. And this way it wouldn't really cost me any money if I already have the parts required to do this. But if all else fails, I'm just going to get them rewelded.

Then just switch everything from the 81 in the 79 rear including axles. I think that should work i have to go look at both rear ends i have in the garage. If anything you can just put in the lsd for now till you work out the other details.

Do you mind looking at the rears that you have? I'm trying to finish my project soon and the rear end is my biggest hassle, since I don't really have a truck to tow it around. And if I could just switch **** over from the 81 to the 79, I would be the best thing that happened to me since... I got the car.

your best bet would be to find a 81-83 LSD. as stated above by trochoid. you dont see these for sale much cause most people go for the 84-85. i knew of one for sale for a while. it just recently sold. i didnt think there was much of a market for it.

druken-- the 79-80 and the 81-85 have a different thread pattern. so youll hit a snag when you try to hook the broke line from the body to the rearend. you CANT use the 81 brakes on the 79 axles cause the 79 axles are drum. what you need to do is swap 3rd members. youll have LSD but youll still be drums and wont have to worry about switching all the brake lines.

when you get ready to you can just put the 81 axles in the 79 housing. youll need the e brake cables for the 81 as well. i think RB sales a set of SS lines for a 79-80 with a 81-85 rearend. you could buy that now and just swap everything from the 81 to the 79 rearend.

If you get a 83 small axle 3rd member, you may wind up with one like mine. The 83 GSL I have had the small axle rear end, but the pinion flange is the same as 84-85. So I am looking for a drive shaft right now to put in my 80 SA track car. I always though the pinion flange would be the same, but apparently not.
