78 or 79 - RX 7

Hello everyone, I am a member of the RX8 club site. My first love was a 1981 RX7, long gone now.

Anyhow, I am doing some repairs to my Accountants house and I noticed she had an RX 7 in her garage. I asked her about it and she explained it belonged to her husband who passed way several years ago, 2 or 3 I think. She told me since I like the car I could have it in exchange for the work I am doing, only about$100.00 in materials and maybe 8 hours labor.

It has been started in many years and I have been reading the threads on how to go about and start it back up.

So I may be biting off more than I can chew but I believe I am going to give it a shot. I look forward to any help you may be able to provide in the future and I will keep your updated with my progress.

Some times they still start after all these years of sitting you know... other times they just need a new fuel pump and some gas or something.... other times they are from hell and need everything to be fixed or replaced.

WELCOME- !! lol... Just kidding! On to your Question!

AWESOME! YES!! DEFINATLY TAKE HER HOME!

Couple things to remember. The ABSOLUTE first thing you you need to do is change the oil. DO NOT attempt to turn the engine over with the old oil.

Next my suggestion would be to pull the spark plugs out...all 4... and then spin the engine over for the first time and see if the oil pressure guage moves at all. If it does... Put them back in and give it a shot at starting her. You need to pay special attention to not flooding the engine.

Also- I do not know how you would go about draining the gas out of the tank...but that would be a major plus...however there may not be anything you can do....and 2-3 years isn't THAT bad on starting one of these things back up.

I noticed that your in Loganville... I am in Marietta...If you would like some help just let me know... There is no reason why we cant make that thing again!

(On edit) Like mentioned before- worst case- your going to have to replace a fuel pump and rebuild the carburator... I would suspect the carb is more of an issue...

If it's an American car, it's a '79. It may have been built in 1978 (as was mine) but it's a '79 model year.

If it run when parked then it should not be hard to start again. Fresh gas and maybe clean the points. bet it will start right up.

If you want to sale it I know some one in the area that likes 78/79's

That is good advice, but the 79 does not have an oil pressure gauge,so he will have to rig one up.

Thanks for all the information and words of encouragement.

I haven’t tried to do anything with it yet. I still have to do the work, I’m starting late next week. I will then get to my home, do an oil and filter change, then go from there.

As far as condition, it is very dirty even though it’s been kept in the garage. I will have to clean it up to see what the paint looks like. I am pretty sure it will have to be painted. The body side moldings are off an in inside the car. The passenger side marker light is broken off. The exhaust is not original. The engine was rebuilt years ago but only has about 1000 miles on it. The carpet needs replacing and the dash is cracked, just how bad I not sure yet. I have not been able to get inside the car since it is blocked by stuff in the garage.

That’s I know for now. When I get it home I will give a better idea and will take some pictures.

Thanks again..

hmeaders-

I bought a 79 with 65,000 miles a couple of months ago and it had been parked since 1993. I can tell you right now, the gas would probably be no good.

I first checked if the engine spun and it did, I just jacked the car up, an ran 5/16th fuel line from a gas can to the fuel pump and after several times playing with it about 10 minutes later, she cranked right up.

Drop the tank, cleaned it out, put fresh tires and registered it about a week later.

Right now I am installing a RB header, presilencer and RB muffler. I will convert to electronic ignition and charge up the a/c since the compressor still works.

Here are some pics.
