Talking 650 CFM holley carb

my friend offered to sell me his 650 CFM holley carb off of his old mustang. Do you think it is too much for my stock port 12A? If jetted right will it work? Maybe i should save it just in case i get my engine ported in the near future

I doubt you'll ever get it to work. From what I've heard it's a recipe for a whole lot of frustration and no success. As well that's way too big for a 12A, unless it's a bridgeport. If you want a Holley, get a Racing Beat modified one, they're completely customized for the rotary. I've heard they bog down pretty bad in the corners though.

Yaw seems to have the ultimate answer. If for some reason you dont want to go that route, I'd go Weber, or if you're lucky maybe you could find an old RB/Dellorto.

I tell ya, I've got a yaw carb on my stock 12a and i love it. you can't beat the support either. He takes alot of the gues work out of it by jeting it appropriately for your car and elevation. He also gives you a couple different jets for fine tuning.

I can't remember where I ran aceoss it, but I remember a thread in August either here or at Mazspeed that concerned a 500CFM Edelbrock and what it took to get the carb to run right on a rotary. There was something about the lack of a "communication" port or channel between either the two primaries or between the primes and the secondaries that was not allowing the Ecarb to get a clean signal for its doglegs. Lack of a pulse or sumting..I've had a few since then... :1party: For those 12As with only a streetport, Holly also has a 450 CFM carb available although it might also run into the same problems.

i love my holley set up

you can use a holley 650 on a streetport 12a.my car starves for more gas at 9500 rpms.i have model #4777 carb,RB intake, holley blue fuel pump and regulator.i never have had any big problems with the set up about every 3 months i adjust the carb and put in new ngk plugs.if i don't then i have a small sputter when turning at a low rpm no sputtering if i punch it around a corner.i think the plugs and cleaning the k & n filter are the most important thing.i have posted some pics in my threads before.i got hit with a virus and lost everything on my harddrive.i'll take some new pics and post them in a few days.

I have a 465cfm Racing Beat Holley. I like it a lot. I have it on a large street port motor and it makes very nice power. I do think the 650 is too much for a stock port motor. It would be nice on a S/P but only if set up right. As far as it bogging in corners, I dont know what they are talking about. Maybe the non RB carbs do that but RB does a good job modding it.

I had a Yaw carb. I liked it a lot. very good driveability and good power for the money. It just wasn't fast enough for me. I like my holley much better.

Yipes! 9500 RPM?! Where does that beast idle in traffic or is it a race-track only rex? I've got a 12A streetport, too, but RP didn't lighten rotors back in the day it was built and we stayed with the stock seals for longevity's sake. I wish I had known about all the companies I do know and spent the dime back then. Til then, I'm staying w/the current build but looking for better street-legal induction system...

A 650 is to big for a stock port. A stock out of the box holly will not run that good,it needs to be set up for a rotary.

Thanks for the help guys I'll probably get it and wait untill i get my engine ported to put it on. He only wants like $30 for it anyway, so if it doesn't work no big loss.

carb

If you can find a good one since they don't make them anymore, in my oppion, the 48ida weber is the easiest to work with all around. There are manifolds for the 6ports now. We use these on everything from stock to full race dry sump motors. You can change jets with out dumping fuel in 2 min. Can be adapted for a stock 12a through a p port 13b. These carbs have a great float bowl design, in a road race car generating over 1.7g they still work great. On the sand they work good up hill, down , side. The only down side, no choke. I drove my 13b p port rpu for 1 1/2 years as my daily driver in San Jose. Even in low 30's a min. with my foot on the gas and it would idle. Average price for a good carb only $425. Not the end all but after all the mods I have done in the past to get the holleys to work great, the weber ida is 1/100 the work. Rob
