I'm thinking about buying an '82 RX7 that's close to my home. I tried searching for options as far as changing it to a 5x114.5 bolt pattern (like some of the 2nd Gen. cars) to allow better brakes and more wheel options.

I found spacers/adapters at one website - CP Racing - but it didn't offer bigger brakes. Can 2nd gen brakes be fitted to the early cars?

 

try sevensonly.com go to brake upgrade. KC Raceware also makes a brake replacement(rotor & hub).

Edit: Sevensonly lists just the 4X110 bolt pattern but I believe both shops will drill whatever quantity/pattern of lugs you want. I know KC Raceware will because they are doing it for me.

You have to pay to play. $700.00 + calipers. I think CP racing offers a cheaper alternative, but I'm not very familiar with them.

 

I plan on doing a write up on this when I'm finished but it is possible to have series 5 brakes on the front. Of course it's not just as easy as bolting it on but with a small amount of customisation it is possible. You're going to have to get custom wheel hubs made which aren't very expensive (costing me $AU80 each). They use the same size wheel bearings as the series 3 struts. After doing that you're going to have to find a way to mount the calipers on, as the series 5 calipers will not bolt on to the same place as the original calipers. Give me about 2 weeks and I'll do a full write up.

 

CPRacing sells a kit that enables you to use the 2nd gen front rotors and calipers. Here is the site: www.cpracing.ca

Their kit goes for $375, so thats not bad. Mind you, this doesn't include rotors and calipers. Just the parts to enable you to use the 2nd gen parts.

My machinist is willing to make the parts if you want them. You would have to find some 1984-85 front struts, with the larger axle. You should be able to find these brakes and parts in a wrecker yard for a reasonable price, downright cheap compared to the aftermarket brakes, which are not any better unless you spend a fortune. Even this conversion may not be justified unless you car is really a nice one.

I do have a complete set of brakes from a 1990 RX-7 which I would sell.
