I run 195/55/15 on my 15x8 with 4.5" back spacing with no issues and no fender rolling. I of course don't have coilovers but I plan to put them on in the spring. I was also hoping to move up to some 205s and roll the fenders a bit.

How much research did you do on tire size? With the coilovers are you certain that the widest you can go is a 175 before you would have rubbing issues?

respeed race coilovers on the front, spring perch welded at 6" from top of the strut tube.
respeed camber plates
technotoytuning roll center adjusters to correct the front suspension.
375 spring rate on the front, 200 on the rear
respeed coils for the rear and i took the height adjusters out so its just the springs
15x8" diamond racing wheels with a 4.5" backspace (or for those who like the offset measurement its 0 offset)
i have 175/55r15 tires all around and no rubbing what so ever.
i rolled my fenders with a baseball bat and a heat gun and had no issues.

when i get some more pics i'll post them..

also i know there is going to be alot of hate on my stretched tires but i make sure that my tire pressure is constant and i do not race my car either.
Your car looks awesome man! Good Job. More pics pls

One thing I question is wouldn't 4.5" backspace on an 8" wide wheels be about a +12 offset?

.5" = 12.7mm (4" would be center of wheel)

I think a 4" backspace on 8" wide wheel would be a zero offet. That's the way I read offsets anyways, just wanted to comment on that incase someone is trying to copy your set up based on offset. someone chime in here

A zero offset 8" wheel has 4.5" of back spacing. If you measure a typical 8" wide wheel from rim lip to rim lip you will find that they are about 9" wide. Wheel width measurements - 8", 7" etc - are from bead to bead.

ah, I see. I figured since wheel width measurements were from bead to bead, backspacing would be measured in the same manner. Thanks for clearing that all up. I stand corrected.

sorry to revive a dead thread but i just wanted to know what backspacing i would need to run a higher offset for my '80. like would i need 4" backspacing or the opposite direction with 5" backspacing??

im trying to go for a flush look but nothing too close to the fenders so i can use em for auto X. basically im looking to roll fenders to make enough room for suspension travel wihout looking sunken into the wheel wells.

thanks in advance :]

what you want to look for is a low profile tire (probably 50 or 45 series) that will fit square on your rim (no bulge) i would suggest 205s or maybe 215's.

i believe your 80 would have the same suspension setup as my 84. i can't remember if they changed any major components. the larger the backspace the closer the inner rim lip is to the center of the car. and vice versa, the smaller, the more "dish" the rim will have.

also the factory non-se wheel and tire specs are 185/70R13 on a 13x5.5 rim with +27mm offset.

so for fitting use this link:

http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

put the stock info in and put your new comparing info in and it will give you all the differences below in the charts (how close it is to your suspension, how much it will poke from old wheels, if the wheel is larger etc)

hope this helps
