wait, i thought 4.44 gears would make you be in the higher rpm range. isnt it the higher number in rear gear, the shorter your gears are? i dont think i even make sense to myself. for me to even hit 80mph in 5th i am at 4grand on the tack. just look at my avatar i took that photo a long while back on a road trip. IT SUCKS!

You sure you have 4.44 gears and not 3.50 gears??? Thats DEFFINATELY not right. At over 80mph you should be over 4000 rpm in 5th. And yeah, your outa gas. Did you make it home?

Last thing I am doing before bed, so I may be way off, but:
Assuming stock -SE rims and tires, and ignoring decrease in radius due to loaded tire deflection:
205/60/14 ~ 300.8mm rad ~ 1890 mm circumferance
I see 3250 rpm on that tach.
3250 engine RPM / .758 5th gear ratio = 4288 Drive Shaft RPM
4288 DS RPM / 4.44 Rear end gear = 965.7 axle RPM
965.7 Axle RPM *1890 mm/rpm = 1825109 mm/min
1825109 mm/min * 1 m/1000mm * 1km/1000m = 1.825 km/min
1.825 km/min * 60 min/hr = 109.5 km/h ~ 68.0 mph
3.50 rear end gets you 86 mph.

When I had 4.44 gearing in my '84 SE, the tach would be at around 4200 RPM at 85 MPH in 5th gear, on stock wheels and 205-60 tires... since gearing was that deep, the car really wasnt going 85 but actually slower.

iirc the speedometer measures the rpm of the output shaft of the transmission. if you modify anything further down the drivetrain (diff/wheels), you introduce speedometer inaccuracy.

i'm convinced the speedo reads way too fast (as in about 20%). but i could be wrong.

I got under it and market the driveshaft @ 6 o'clock then reached over to the inner tire and marked it @ 6 o'clock.
Gave the driveshaft 4 full turns and watched the mark on the inner tire COMPLETE 4 turns and end up at about 1 o'clock.
What does that mean?
Is there a thing as 3.50? What did come out of, and who sells them?
oh yeah, I did run out of gas leaned out @ 5k blew the motor...

the theory is, the higher the numbers, the taller the gears usually; while the lower number.. say 3.90 (vs. 4.44) the lower the gear is
i believe you're using SE tranny, but w/ what final drive gear or rear end of from?
i'm fed up having bad gas mileage as well on freeway trips..

This has already been mentioned in this thread but it doesn't look like anyone knows how to read. You can't just change the tyre size or diff ratio and expect the speedo to still read correctly! With 4.44's the car will be travelling a lot slower than the speedo indicates.

Is replacing the ring & pinion gear difficult? How much would it cost to have it done?
