3rd gear troubles...

Hi everyone,
okay here's what's going on. I just got my car out of the shop yesterday afternoon, so at night time I was going to the store for my mom, and on one of my "side trips" I was heading downtown, and saw this guy from my school with a camaro (88 camaro, 4.0 litre v6, K&N intake, flowmaster exhaust, headers, etc..) and he's always talking about how he's going to smoke me, etc.. well, he's also a good friend, but we raced 4 times, and I won 3 out of 4 times. but here's the thing, each time I put it in 3rd the car cut out really bad. it pulled really hard in first, burns the tires in 2nd, and it usually chirps in 3rd, I usually take up to about 6.5k when racing. I was like what the hell is going on.. I just had the car in the shop for this same thing.. he said it was my driveshaft, so took it to the shop, and had them rebalance the driveline.
so I'm not sure what's going on with the car now, is it my tranny or what?
anyways, thanks for the help.
God Bless.
John W.

If it's cutting out, it's not a driveline problem... (I'm assuming the car suddenly runs like ****/no power?)

VERY common problem. Your fuel filter is old. Change it! I lost a race because of a fuel filter, too... 1st gear, hanging on him... 2nd gear, hanging on him, pulling slightly... 3rd gear, *Buuhhhh* watch him go byebye... WTF?

We have really weak fuel systems, and if the fuel filter is dirty, there's just enough fuel flow to keep the carb full enough for 1st and 2nd gears, by the time you shift to 3rd the bowls are dry and you just get a big fat load of BOG until you let off and let the bowls fill back up.

Even if that's not the problem you're describing, if your filter is more than 3 or 4 months old, change it because it's probably dirty enough to be hurting your fuel flow. It's real easy to get to if you have a pair of jackstands, not messy to change if you have a pair of visegrips to GENTLY clamp off the fuel lines, and a filter costs less than $5.

thanks for the reply, it most likely is a dirty fuel filter, I was thinking a fuel pump, but hopefully it's just that. I put on average about 600-700 miles a week on my car...
and I changed the filter about 2 months ago.. so it's probably time to change it.
thank you for the advice.
God Bless.

I'll make sure to let you know what happens with the repair.

Good news guys, I raced my friend after work so that I would reinact your drive condition and low and behold I pulled really hard in first and tore threw 2nd but when I hit around 6.5k in third the engine just seamed to start cutting out on me. I was like WTF and then let off the RPM's and put it in third and every thing was fine again. I am going to get a new filter tomorrow. I am also going to get some new fuel line that attach to the filter because about a year ago I put some regular lines in that where not snakes around like the originals were and I think they may be getting kinked which could cut down on the flow. Would you guys agree?

I replace the fram fuel filter with a mazda OEM filter for $3.50. I noticed that when I poured the gas out of the back end of the filter I had alot of junk in there, It probly due to have the car site for like 7 months with no gas in the tank. Me bad. Another thing I noticed is one of the fuel lines I replaced a few years ago was kinked really bad, I think it was only letting about 50-60% flow threw it. I put a new fuel injection line on since they are more rigid, and placed it so that it would not kink in the future. I will let you guys and girls know how it works out. I need to race my friend agan next weekend.
