3rd, 4th,and 5th rpm problem
when im in 1st and 2nd i can redline fine. but in 3rd it bogs at about 6000 then when i shift and get back on the gas...at about 4500 in 4th it bogs then shift into 5th and it bogs about about 4200. its not fuel filter its new. and as far as i can tell the ignition is fine. a little help would be nice?
Thanks

yup all stock. i had this problem before i riged the mech secondarys too. i thought it was the fuel pump. but it redlines fine in 1st and 2nd...doesnt it use the same amount of gas at 5000 rpm in 2nd gear and at 5000 rpm in 4th gear?
i DO have a bit of a hole in my gas tank..rust ate through my spare tire "area thing" all the way through the gas tank...so when i slam on brakes...gas gets shot at me.
ill be droping the tank soon to patch or replace it. you think i should go ahead and get a new fuel pump, fpr, and new lines (since im gona be running a blow-through 12a soon)?
thanks alot

also i know that on my bros WRX...his tanks has to be pressurized or it wont send fuel right...is this the same on my 7...because i DO have a hole in my tank..
Thanks

Hmm not sure on the pressurized part. Remember WRX is EFI and needs alot more pressure then a carby setup. Just because its idling high wouldn't mean its running rich. I'd get that fuel pressure checked asap, you dont want it to be leaning out too much or kaboom. bye bye apex seal.
Wheres all the carb experts? Carl? Sterling? :P

damnit man just replace the damn fuel pump. real easy o do, and buy a pressure regulator.THey sell them at discount auto parts. Thats your problem. It's leaning out at constant high RPMS. Just cause you can take it high rpms in the first 3 gears doesn't mean it's not leaning out. YOu go to those rpms very quickly. You don't stay at them for longer durations. OK? Also it might be idling oddly cause you might neeed to tune the carb some. Fuel pressure and tuning of carb.
PS sorry for being so mean. I've had a bad night

I had this problem with my weber... and it was a lack of fuel. id replace ur fuel filter, and replace your fuel pump too. Fuel pumps do wear out ya know.
Oh yeah ur tank does not have to be pressureized to run right. but none the less id get the gas tank fixed. I belive the stokc fuel pump has the pressure regulator built into it.

YapaKanichi is right regarding the hi rpms / fuel consumption thing.
First of all, the more air in the mixture, the leaner the mixture. The leaner the mixture, the higher the rpms will go, but the less power it will have.
But the range of fuel to air mixture is small. You can get the mixture rich for power, and by adding just a tad more fuel, it'll be too rich and choke itself to death.
So when you can not get your idle down past 2000 rpms when you are trying to tune the carb, it's because there's a leak somewhere on the carb or manifold, and the mixture contains too much air.
Your mixture adjustment is acting like a garden hose. The vacuum leak is acting like a 12 inch water main. The garden hose isn't making a bit of difference anymore with that massive leak!
(make sense?)
I used to say that idle adjustment didn't effecrt anything in the main circuit. For the most part, that' true...unless you have a leak!
You need to replace your fuel filter again, and fix your idle.
While you have the tank out, you should replace the pump with an aftermarket one. It'll be very easy to access with the tank out.
Prepare to spend $120.00 minimum on a Holley regulator (1-4 psi), and a cheap-end (Carter) 7 lb pump.
The car is geared very low in 1st and second compared to 3rd. So you could run fumes through the carb and still move.

You may not have to have your tank pressurized but if anyone of your gas lines has a minut leak your fuel flow will be drastically less than if they were alright. Check your fuel filter and see how much gas is in it, if it is below half then you have a leak somewhere between the filter and the gas tank, my guess would be up by the top of the tank.
