3 core short radiator year?

Did the RX-7 (1979 to 1982) come out with a short 3 core radiator? If they did , which year was it?

Here is the United States, the 3 row short radiator is in the '79-82 Rx-7. With the air-to-oil cooler mounted under the short radiator. Although I have seen some 2 row in these.

In '83-85 12A switched to the 2 row tall radiator with water-to-oil cooler.

The '84-85 13B still used the tall radiator but switched back to the air-to-oil cooler which was mounted in front of the radiator.

I had an '81 GSL with an automatic transmission that came from the factory with a 3-row radiator.

What do they mean by "rows" and how do you count 'em?

You can coun the "rows" buy opening the radiator cap, and count the row of the water passage. If you are facing the engine there should be 2 or 3 cores. Mazda did not make a 1 core radiator since this would be useless. I still did not get a clear answer to my question. Does this mean that the automatic 1979 to 1982 came with the 3 core radiators?

I have a 79 Auto rad and I'm almost positive its 3 rows. I'm not in a position to check but I will later tonight and let everyone know.

79-82 = Short/Stubby 3 row radiators. (Oil Cooler mounted underneath)
84-85 = Taller 2 row radiators (oil cooler mounted on Bee-hive, except SE.

1983 is a mutt. I am not sure of the radiator for those, but it did have the crappy bee-hive oil cooler.

Directfreak,

I just came from the junk yard this morning. There was a 1979 M/T and a 1981 M/T RX7 . Both cars had a 2 core shorty radiator w/the oil cooler mounted below it. Then there was a 1982 RX7 with a A/T that had a 3 core radiator (the radiator was trashed. the fan cut a groove into it) the oil cooler is also mounted below it. My question is, is this an aftermarket radiator? or do all 1979 to 1982 RX7 automatic transmission come with a 3 core? Or maybe its just the 82 A/T? I'm more confused than before. Then I found a link to Mazda Trix and in the link it doesn't say anything about a 3 core RX7 factory radiator. Only the Mazda Trix aftermarket radiator. Maybe Mazda did not install a 3 core shorty in any of the production cars. If anybody else knows anything please let me know.

As far as I can make sense from what I read:

79-82 - stubby radiator 2 core (unless auto, then three core) with air/oil cooler under radiator

83-85 - tall two core (auto MIGHT have a 3 core, no one has said yet) with water/oil cooler under filter

84-85 - GSL-SE tall 2 core with air/oil cooler IN FRONT of radiator.

Oh, and if your gonna buy a 2 row 83-85, get it from www.radiators.com. I got mine from there, and it got to me really quick, no bent fins AT ALL. It looks great, and it was $100 less than MazdaTrix .

~T.J.

PS - If/when you call, they may quote you a higher price. Just tell them that you saw it on the interent cheaper. They will honor the price . Also, all the radiators they ship are for auto trannies (or so I was told). The one I got for my 83 GSL is for an auto, but its still a 2 core, it just has the hookups at the bottom for the auto tranny .
