melting emmissions

coming home today when i pulled off the hiway I notice the car sounds funny. I thought it was a new exhaust leak, then i thought it sounded like when you take the cover off the airbox.
Well you know that little grey attachment on it, with the L-shaped hose? It melted away, so the hose is just 'chillin there now.
Question:

why does this weird **** always happen to me?

Is it bad to leave the hose disconnected like that? I've got a spare box, but I'm afraid it will do the same thing.

what could have caused it? Many months ago a little fuzz thing blew out of there and I just left it out.
