3.8l fan won't fit

DANG! I bought everything but the relay for my 3.8l for fan conversion and went to test fit it last night and it WON'T FIT.

I have a 1980 and the fan motor is hitting the water pump pulley.

Is the 1980 fan thicker? Also, I removed the mechanical fan, the plate that holds it on. There is like 0.5 inch of metal shaft sticking out.

Anyway, has anyone cut the fan shroud assembly down some to get it to fit? There appears to be at least 1" or more of clearance in the assembly.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have space dual fan setup for my maxima. It is thinnner than the 3.8l fan. I may try it if I can figure out the wiring. That setup should hit 2000CFM as well. High performance aftermarket is rated for 2800CFM as a direct replacement for the maxima.

I'm going to court today for my job. I may check out some of the bigger parts places on my way up there.

Can you mount the fan slightly off center?

OEM's do it all the time, you'll still get airflow over the same sized area of the radiator it just wont be as aesthetically pleasing.

If you mount it on the other side of the rad you have to either find a way to turn the fan around to face the other way, or wire it to spin "backwards". It's a definite possibility though.

The fan shroud that you have came with the fan yes? Cutting the shroud shouldn't cause huge problems especially with a fan that flows so much. A little decreased effeciency but it should be okay.

I can get it to spin either way. I have wired it up as a pusher or puller. I just didn't know if it would hurt the fan to be a pusher.

Good idea.

It won't hurt, but a puller is more effecient. Its easier to suck than to blow.
