3.8 taurus fan Install

Ok i went and go my fan today ant will be working on the install but I was wanting to see pics. I know I am gonna have to do some trimming and would like to see where before I get into mine. Also I would like to know about the wiring the fan I got has 3 wires. I seen some that had 4 but the shroud looked different than the ones I seen in treads before.

Not sure about the 4 wire unit, but the 3 wire one should be ground, low and high. Maybe the 4 th wire is for AC on?

Here is what I used for my Taurus fan install on two separate 1st gens. Works great every time. It's well worth the money for it.

As far as mounting the fan, the only issue is around the bottom radiator hose. You'll have to cut off some of the plastic on the shroud to go around the fitting on the radiator. Other than that just drill some holes in it, and mount it with zip ties. It really is a perfect fit for the radiator.

I used a jig saw to cut off the plastic around the rad hose, but a dremel would work well too. You obviously will need a drill, wirecutters, wrenches/sockets to get the old fan off, screwdrivers, etc. I didn't really need any specialty tools, other than the saw I used to fix the shroud.

Nick are you installing a relay that is heat activated? That is the route I want to go.

Get that broken bolt out, it a balance issue...

the amperage on the fan is very high make sure to run a relay to it also, this thing pushes out 50 amps, pretty good fan though, worked fine on most of my cars

Yea after I went backout there to look at it the water pump gasket appears to be leaking and no parts store sales just the gasket. Did anyone else have to put an exta washer on there bolts?

O and a pick of my other project for the day.

there was a post on the 3.0 taurus fan. At power on it needs 67amps instantanious, then about 36amps to run. I have been looking for other fans with lower power requirements. I liked the taurus fan for all the air it moves. I had a taurus but the taurus would also eat alternators for lunch.

add it up
tarurs fan 36A
headlights 4.6 x 2 = 9.2A
blower fan 5 - 10 A
stereo @ 50W 4A some use much more right?
High energy ignition, like the transistor trick 7 A?
other electrical needs??????

61 - 66 A constant.

your alternator will say" i cant take it anymore"

That's a Ford thing... I had a Thunderbird with the 3.8 (Same engine, just turned the proper way for RWD... With a clutch driven fan.) It also destroyed alternators.

still 60 to 65 A is alot
a must is an alternator upgrade even then your pushing the alternator bigtime.

i just feel finding a fan or fans that will do the job under all circumstances but that does not have the large power drain of the taurus fan might be a better choice

thats great but isnt a better alternative to find a fan that is more compatible in amperage draw and deliver the needed airflow too?
