They bolt right up to the engine. What you have to swap out is the tailshaft housing because the 2nd gen is longer.
Do you have 2 switches on the side of your existing tranny or just 1?

Just making sure. The Se has 2 switches in the trans as does the 2nd gens. The non-Se trans had only one switch which is for the back up lights.

The changing of the tailshaft takes about 10-15 minutes.

not quites as simple as some might say. Unless the spline on your clutch plate is the same you will have to change that, TII starter is different to early model, tailshaft yoke is different spline. TII clutches are bigger than early model, you will need either a TII clutch (expensive to replace) or you can use a stepdown flywheel and use your existing clutch. As far as i'm aware the only things that need to be connected to the box are the wires for reverse lights.
I have an S4 turbo box and an S5 turbo box behind early motors in two cars, the S4 box is a little easier to mont in an early 7 than an S5 box. Also you will most likely have to shorten the extension housing to get gearstick to sit in standard position.

Hey, mu aussie buddie, how's it going mate? Did you see my request for a Carbon fiber rear taillight finsisher and fiberglass 1 piece frontend?

I forgot about the possibility that his friend may have a turbo trans.
The secondary switch on the trans is for the signal to the ECU when the trans is in fifth gear on the Se models.
The splines on all the non turbo models is the same as i recall the turbos are different.
The Se does not have the problem like the early 79-80 models on shift towers. So there is no other mod except changing out the tail shaft housing with non-turbo trannies.
And of course to use the Se crossmember and trans mount.

13 beef had a valid point about the turbo trannies and i am glad that he posted. If it turned out that he was installing a turbo trans it would have been a nightmare wthout the proper mods.
Thanks for coming forward and clarifying which trans he is using.

The FC N/A trans can be installed without swapping the tailshaft housing, however, there are a couple issues to consider. First, the mount is different, and requires modding the 1st gen mount or crossmember. Not too difficult, but time consuming. Second, the shifter is aboput 2" further back on an FC trans. Modding the floor is required. Nieither of these issues are a problem, when the tailshaft housing is swapped.
Also, I reccomend swapping the speedo gear from the original trans, to insure the speedo remains accurate.

Most ratios are very similar, except for 5th. 5th is a taller ratio, meaning the cruise RPM will be lower. Power and MPG may be adversly affected.
