2nd gen fmoc plug

On the 2nd gen fmoc, there is a gadget consisting of a spring and a pellet that lives behnd the bottom plug. I removed this when I was cleaning my cooler and left it out, assuming it was just thermostatic. This allowed oil to flow directly from the "in" to the "out" on the cooler, bypassing the cooling lines. Wacky, huh?

Does any one know:
What this thing's function is?
Which way it goes in (spring up or pellet up)?

That is the thermostat, works just like the one in the cooling system. Sec. 2, p. 2 of the 87 FSM has a diagram of the oil system. You be able to to intstall the thermostat correctly from the diagram.

Just for future reference, you're lucky trochoid knew and answered... Questions about 2nd Gen parts are usually better to ask in the 2nd Gen section.
