2nd Gen Alternator?
2nd Gen Alternator?
Ok guys, I got to noticing my alternator is "different" than all the ones in my other cars...It has no fan on it. Its in an 83 GSL, but i was just wondering if maybe its a second gen alternator as I noticed most of those (if not all) dont have fans. Can anyone identify this for me? It came with the car (not installed), and I had to make some custom spacers for it to fit right (mainly cause I didnt have any spacers at all), but maybe the stock one doesnt even use spacers? I dont know...The plug plugged right into it, and it works fine, I was just wondering. Thanks.

My 83 GSL does have a fan on it. I also had to make up a spacer, probably because the last guy who changed it lost the spacer. The idiot put the alternator on anyway, without the spacer, busted the bracket on the alternator, that's why I had to buy a new one from Autozone. Anyway, both the old and new alternator had a fan on it. Did you put the dual pulley on yourself, or did you buy the car that way. I know when I put my dual pulley on, the fan slips right off. Maybe the person who put the dual pulley on, figured he didn't need the fan, and thought he was getting rid of some unnecessary inertia? Just a guess.
Nope, I got the car in a box of parts and have been slowly putting it together. The alternator had the stock pully on it, and I was using it that way for a little while. I just got my dual belt pully and installed it myself, so I know that it had the stock pully with no fan. Thats why I was thinking maybe 2nd gen cause it was missing the fan, and it was just thrown in a box with some other parts, I just assumed it was the right one, lol. Hey, at least it works

Good call, bro. I just ran outside and looked at my 85 GSL, no fan
. I was thinking of my 84 GS, it has a fan, lol. Ok anyway, thanks for setting me straight. Is there anyway to tell if it might be a second gen though anyway?

1st gens are like 50 amps.
GSL-SE's are like 55 amps
2nd Gens vary from 65-75 amps.
TII's = 80 amps
FD's = 100 amps
Cosmo's = 90 amps.
