2nd Gen Air Flow Meter on 1st Gen

I recently tested the resistance on my AirFlow Metter on my 85' Fuel Injected Rx7 and it didn't seem to match the setting found in the Hayne's manual. I decided to go to a local junk yard and pull another one and see if it had similar results. I found one, but it was off a 2nd generation Rx7. It seemed to register good on the voltage metter so I bought it for $75, but when I got home I realized that

1)The little scoop thing that leads to the airbox is plastic on the 2nd gen, so I ripped the metal one off the 1st gen and bolted it on, but the gasket broke and I think there's a little air hold left on there

2) the part of the meter leading to the intake on the 1st gen can fit INSIDE the one on the 2nd gen. I was successful at inserting the rubber intake hose INSIDE of the new AFM instead of secure to a clamp outside. However, when I hooked everything up and started the car...it keeped jaring the rpms an fluxuating rapidly, like I had a leak somewhere (gee I wonder why).

I was thinking about sealing the gap on the cup part with Silicon and trying to get a custom hose or expansion brace to accomidate the larger pipe, but before I do, ARE THESE TWO AFMs compatiable as far as voltage goes and signals sent to the ECU? Has anyone successfully transpalnted one into the other? Did I just waste $75?

Any help deeply appericated

I don't think they are compatible. I have read this attempted on a couple of sites, both with unfavorable results.

You just wasted $75. The internal wiring of the 2nd gen AFM are different from the 1st gens.

There were a couple of guys who tried to rewire it (can't remember the websites now) but they said it wasn't worth the hassle.

The 2nd gen AFM I believe has 2 flapper doors where are the 1st gen only has one.

See if they'll give you a refund (might be worth a try)
