2GCDFIS in GSL-SE

Has anyone successfully done the 2GCDFIS ignition conversion in a GSL-SE with a working AC system?

Reason I ask is I just extracted a good coil setup from a turbo 2 rx-7 at my local yard and there is like no place to mount it at all with the AC installed... was wondering if anyone else had creative ideas around that.

I'm going to bump this old thread instead of creating a new one, since I'm having the same issue.

The wiring was a piece of cake but I ran into one slight problem, there's no where to actually MOUNT the 2nd gen coil! My AC doesn't work, but I would like to fix it someday. For the time being, I have pushed the AC compressor all the way in and removed the belt, and the coil pack barely fits there. That will do for now, but does anyone have any better ideas of where to stick it?

Here is what I ended up doing... with a cutoff saw, sandpaper, and paint I cut the main coil mount lower bracket in half, painted the 2nd Gen coil to match and drilled a few mounting holes into the side with bolts under neath. Make sure to paint the underside nut or it will rust through but that was what I did. You'll notice I lost my spacer between the coil mounting plates in the process so I'm making a new one of those but for now I used a few old lug nuts. Works great

i did this install yesterday in my 85 GSL. i wanted to put it where everyone else does but couldnt od to a power steering hose. i moved my ac comp all the way in and took the belt off(it needs a recharge). what i did was i moved the fusible links to where everyone mounts their 2ndg gen coil and i mounted the 2nd gen coild where the fusible links where. i also took the 2nd gen coil off of the ignitor and turned it around to have the connectors at a better location.

AWS, I was wondering about that but wasn't sure if the wires going too/from the fusible links would be able to be moved. I may try that out.

What I ended up doing (for now) is remove the windshield wiper fluid bottle (mine doesn't work anyway) and the mounting braket and put the coil there. It fits nicely, but the first gen plug wires won't reach that far, so if I leave it there I will need to get some 2nd gen wires to be able to reach.

On a somewhat ridiculous note, I accidentally dropped and lost the little nut that holds the positive cable to the coil. Naturally, the auto parts store didn't have any that small, so I'm going to have to go hunting for a little nut tomorrow. Fun.

JKM--- all i did to move th fusible links was to move the mounting bracket and full assembly to holes that were already in the body. very easy. took maybe a minute or two. what coils are you using? stock, MSD or other? i installed MSD in mine and the nuts for the MSD and diamond(stock) are different sizes. if you happen to need then you can have my stock coils with nuts for dirt cheap. if you want them pm me. if not and you cant find a nut, let me know and pm me your address and ill send you all the diamond nuts/washers i have.

Right now I'm just using a straight 2nd gen coil, as detailed in the "20 min easy install" thread that is up in the archive. Later on I plan on using the "transistor trick" although I don't feel like getting all the parts and assembling that just yet.

Thanks for the tips, aws. I moved the fusible links and stuck the coil in the links spot. I had to move the wiring around a little bit, but it all fits fine. The only thing is I'm still going to have to order some FC plug wires since the FB wires are just barely too short.

Jarath, I really like your installation, it looks much cleaner than mine. I need to keep both stock coils there for a future modification, though. Pity.

JKM---yeah the stock wires wont work. it wasnt an issue for me though as when i bought my 2nd gen coil the seller sent me wires as well. im glad to hear you got it installed. now get a nut! those 2nd gen nuts are insanely small.

Oh, I got the nut from Lowes. It just happened to be the only metric nuts that I could find, but they are perfect. The install is complete, I just need to go to Advance and order some wires.
