1st gen tranny troubleshooting

Hello, just picked up a used 1st gen tranny from ebay, it is an FB tranny so it is the longer one, it has no vent on the bellhousing so im assuming it is an earlier model with a closer ratio. It was graded an A by the dealer and in good condition. Upon receiving the transmission I noticed it wont shift into any gears but 5th or reverse. I checked the shifter, bushings etc. but all looks normal to me. According to my knowledge I am assuming it could be an internal problem such as synchros but I am hoping I am wrong and would rather not crack it open, but I will if I have to. I have another 85 GSL-SE tranny and it shifts into all gears just fine. Note that both these transmissions are off the car and have no clutch or any hydraulics attached. Is there something I am missing?

you might try spinning it when you shift, but it should shift on the floor.

Take it back to the dealer who rated it an "A", and get your money back.

To clarify: If you had bought it as faulty and intended to do the work yourself to make it right, that's one thing; but when you pay for "A" grade parts in good condition, that's what you should get.

"Non-functional" is not "good condition."

Leastwise that's my opinion.

I completely agree, I was just hoping my diagnostic was off. Although I can handle a rebuild, that's just extra time and cost. I was hoping for a plug and play scenario and that's what I paid for and expected when I read the advertisement, the way I see it I was deceived as a buyer. Currently in the process of returning the item. Thanks for the input.

Glad to hear it's working out for you in the end, sucks to deal with all the hassle though. Best of luck to your RX returning to driving condition!

thanks! the seller has accepted my return and the refund is on its way. really, the biggest hassle was shipping, getting over the fact that my "new" tranny was broken came faster than expected

this is for my project car, my daily driver is still operational. hope to get her done real soon. til then, my daily helps me get alot of seat time in for race day!
