1st gen top speed?

Just wanted an idea of how fast people have gotten their 1st gens to go. Granted, I'm more interested in 1/4 mile time (I guess I'm just too much of a sissy to keep my car at 110+mph for any extended length of time), but I was just wondering.

i have had my 79 up to 130 before, and there was still plenty left.. if i tried, i could probably make it closer to 140.. the only thing that was scary about it was my crappy rubber.. for the most part, i try to keep it below 100, but once i get my new wheels...........

as far as 1/4 times: the only time that i have timed mine, i ran a 14.6 at 101mph. and that was with a horrible launch, burning the tires throughout all of first gear, and barking them every gear there after

well if you figure that stock they had 98 hp, yah it is going to be slow... but a little work will change that..

17-18 sounds about right for a stock 12a

well, the first time I drove my seven. I pulled out of the drive way, and floored it (I couldnt resist) power shifted(well whatever shifting without letting off the throttle is called) through 1-2-3 reaching the end of my street, I was doin a good solid 80 MPH, in third Not bad, I thought. until it spuddered and died
But hopedfully yayarx7 is gonna get over here, and fix it, or at least tell me whats wrong Say a prayer for the rex, live, or die LATERZ, Andrew

I got up to 110 with a C5 corvette the other day. With the sunroof off and the windows down it gets really scarry. The wind whistles through the car and it creates hella resistance, but I kept up with him.

My tires are sooooooo dry-rotted and bald that I haven't dared to go over 85 yet, granted that 85 was in a 30 mph zone. Once I get my new wheels I'm gonna go for 120 on my local highway

With my previous 84 SE, I went to about 120 mph, and it was NOT Nice at all. Scared the poop out of me.

Later, after I threw some money at the car, (Streetported, Front Spoiler, Rear Spoiler, New bushings, complete exhaust system, etc)

I was able to go 140 without TOO much stress. The body kit with the Three piece tail made a Huge difference anytime I did I high speed run.

As much as I love speed, the first Gen is simply not designed for top speed. As I always tell people, it's more of a quick (acceleration) car, than a fast (top speed) car.

125 and solid as a rock. That is pre turbo of course.

If 1st gen guys want to go fast, they had better have ground effects. Too much turbulance.

No, you have it about right. 120 for a near stock 12A. 125ish for a near stock 13B 6PI.

When my '80 was all stock I had it up to 5800rpm in 5th. (Speedometer just goes "clunk" against its stop midway through 3rd gear ) It was still pulling, too, but I had to back out because I was coming up on traffic/speed trap. The car was VERY stable. (Then again my previous 100+mph experiences have been in old Fords that would have about 500lb of lift at high speeds, combined with superlight power steering... NOT for the faint of heart!) I used to cruise to work ar 5k in 5th all the time The police on my to-work route would never ticket before 9am, and there was little traffic at 7-7:30 when I was on the road.

Stock 1/4mi was 17-flat at 82 or so MPH for '79. By '85 that went down to about 17.4 at 80 because the cars kept getting heavier.

I have no clue what the top end of the '85 is, and I don't plan on exploring it... ever since I started racing, I have no desire to do dumb things on the street anymore

Did you have a stock tire size on there? Or maybe a turbo? 145 is not a speed acheivable by a non-turbo 1st gen with a near to stock tire size.

Tire sixe will affect your speedo, as will the differential...

maybe he means km/h

To get a 1st-gen to punch through a 145mph headwind would require roughly 200hp.
