1st Gen rx7 not starting
Hi! Let me start off that i am new to this forum lol. I have been looking around but nothing online really gives me a good outlook of what may be wrong with my car.
About 5 to 6 months ago i bought a 1981 rx7, when i first got it, she ran and drove like a champ for about a week or 2. Then i started to run into problem, knocking fuel pump, not receiving fuel to my carb, and it would only run with starting fluid and gas in the carb... Now i am lucky if it get a few drops in the carb and it will run for maybe a minute or two.
What would be good ways to go with finishing the car so it runs good again?!?!

Classic sign a gas tank is shedding internal gunk into the fuel:
Full tank - runs great till about 1/2 full, then gunk overwhelms fuel outlet, starts plugging fuel filter and stalling car.
Fill-er-up and it seems OK again. Till gas level gets low. Changing the filter MIGHT solve the prob if it is just the filter that is clogged, but...
So do that first.
Usually happens the a car is incorrectly stored (ie old gas left in tank, no gas stabilizer) for long periods.
Only solution I am aware of (as I had to do this too) is to drain and drop the tank and have a qualified Rad shop dunk-and-clean it out.
Your FB does have a drain plug (mine didn't. ugh.), and removal is pretty straight forward. Details can be supplied.
Oh, and Welcome!

Had a similar problem about a year ago. Only way to know for sure is check fuel pressure and fuel flow, starting at the carb and working your way back toward the tank. Checking for fuel filter, fuel pump, and gas tank filter issues along the way. I posted my progress on this forum - maybe it'll help. For me, clearing the fuel lines from the fuel pump input back toward the tank is what did it for me. Then I drained the tank. I was lucky and avoided dropping the fuel tank, but none of this troubleshooting/repair is very hard.

First thing to do is get the service manual (see my signature for the link) so you can find your way around. Next, start at the carburetor and check for fuel level in the float chamber windows and debris in the fuel lines. The FSM has a testing procedure laid out with diagrams. The fuel filter is a must check item. If OK so far, then you have a functioning fuel delivery system. The fuel pump will deliver 2-3 psi at the carb if all is well. The FSM test if it passes will assure adequate volume.

If your pump is knocking it probably is not able to draw gas from the tank. Start at the back and make sure the lines are clear, filter is good and pump works. You may end up dropping the tank as you find gunk in the lines or filter.

All great suggestions but #1 step, replace the fuel filter before anything else,. Cost you 4$ at Autozone and 15 mins of your time with a pair of pliers. If the issue persist do as advised above , check the fuel line PSI, check your carb, and fuel tank in that order.
