J Oliver - I believe that I read somewhere in these threads that the stock 1st Gen outer tie-rods and connecting stud mated right up to the VW rack. Can you confirm this? TIA

The stock 1st gen Inner tie-rods ( the ones closest to the center of the car, they have a longer cast body) do indeed thread right on the VW rack. (go figure!)
I will take pics of what you need so all ya have to do is give the pic to your best wreckers.
The instruction booklet that will come with the kit has all the pics you will need to get the job done with your eyes closed.

Oh ya I have already started the small amount of R&D on the right hand rack kit, it is a little difficult because I dont have a right hand rack to work with.

 

How many are you making for the first batch?

I was wondering why you chose the vw rack instead of a ford mustang II or pinto rack that are so popular with the hot rod crowd. Flaming River makes new r&p units for like $250. I'll be grateful for the vw kit, but wondered why that rack?

the distance between the pivot points is correct and they are cheap ... well thats my guess anyway

 

Well a heavier car that doesn't have power steerings ratio wont be that good the VW rack is 3.3 turns lock to lock..

And you can get a rebuilt one from parts america for like $150.. and they are probably the right length...

All of the above plus I am a longtime VW lover and owner and I am very familiar with the Rabbit steering feel, dimensions and cost. Plus I had 2 of them hanging on my wall.

 

Plus, Mustang II/Pinto racks are front steer, the Rabbit rack is rear steer. Another suitable candidate could be a "K" car rack, but I am not sure on it's measurements. I know that is what the streetrod/hotrod crowd uses for rear steer conversions on the Mustang II / Pinto IFS.

 

Also, you have to remember that our cars are rear steer, the 'stang and pinto are front steer. If you want a new rack, I'm PRETTY sure the omni rack is the same as, or close to the same as the VW rack. From my understanding VW built or suplied the parts for the Omni. And you can get upgraded omni racks.

The Omni is just another K car, like the Daytona, all 6 models of LeBaron, New Yorker, etc. Chrysler was skirting bankrupcy at the time and many of those parts are interchangeable.

I'm trying to hold on for this kit. Just wondering how the R & D is going and when you expect to have the kits available and if you have calculated a final price.

I fear that I'm going to have to fix my steering gear soon or I'm going to have an accident. But I would rather go to a rack.

Hey guys most all of the R&D is finished and we are just finishing up the manufacturing process (we have too many orders to build them the way I was doing it, it just was not fast enough) anyway the finished product is going to completely surpass your expectations of build quality and finish. We are currently photographing and creating the most comprehensive install instructions known to man. Sooooo...very soon.
